BLM Warns of Closure
March 21, 2004

Back in January the BLM issued a warning that continued trespass into threatened and endangered plant sites and habitat would cause Clear Creek to be closed. This warning was issued in conjunction with the emergency closure that the BLM declared around a San Benito Evening Primrose site in Larious canyon.

Yesterday, the Salinas Ramblers received a second warning that was sent to Clear Creek stakeholders (OHV, environmental and public organizations) announcing that continued trespass into closed areas has exceeded thresholds set in a consultation between the BLM and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Salinas Ramblers asks everyone viewing this page to spread the word around the OHV community that this continued trespass will certainly cause Clear Creek to be closed to OHV use. Text of the letter to stakeholders and the warning notice are posted below.

What can you do to preserve OHV recreation in Clear Creek

Please observe the following rules while in Clear Creek:
  • Only ride on well-established roads and trails. All routes are currently open unless they are fenced or signed “Closed”. Some routes have trail numbers, but many don’t.
  • Do not make new trails! Please do not ride cross-country. A single track on a semi-barren hill does not constitute a trail. Only hill climb on completely barrens areas that have been used for years.
  • Do not trespass into the San Benito Mountain Natural Area. This area has been closed for years yet people are still leaving the established roads and making new tracks on pristine barren areas and the environmentalists are pissed.
  • Do not ride in Hill Climb Canyon that the BLM closed in the mid-1990s. There are a number of threatened and endangered plant populations in this canyon and there is a lot of trespass occurring in this area.
  • Do not ride behind Closed Signs and fences. They are there for a reason.. Whether you agree with the closures or not, please observe them and join the fight to have them reversed.
You should donate to a legal defense fund that might be needed to challenge a proposed BLM plan revision or to fight a lawsuit by the environmentalists. Make checks payable to Blue Ribbon Coalition Legal Defense Fund. Please mail checks to the Salinas Ramblers MC, P. O. Box 541, Salinas, CA 93902-0541
