My neighbor guilted me into doing it on my project bike when I was in denial, and sure enough the piston was cracked. You can see some of the piston through the exhaust port... and see if it's scored, but you won't necessarily see the crack. If the piston is cracked, you can replate with Nickasil and get a new piston for $350 or so, or do the same with a big bore kit and custom porting for about $500.
