Cold Start Problems

I have a 99 kdx200 with a fresh motor and it is diffucult to start when cold. My normal start up procedure is pull choke and kick without any throttle which usually has it start to fire up before slowly lossing revs before dying. It is as if it is starved of fuel. This is followed by kicking it over many more times before the same happens again 2 or 3 times before eventually coming to life. Any ideas what this could be? Hot starts are no problems.

Check your carb for a clogged choke circuit. Sounds like your getting no effect from the choke.

Check the reeds also

Thanks for the response. The choke does appear to work once the bike is going as I can tell it richens up when its on. As far as the reeds are concerned it has a new set of Boysens

You need to check the idle circuit in the carb then. clogged pilot jet or pilot circuit, or airscrew adjustment incorrect.

Thanks for the tips, I have been turning the air screw out a long way so it could well be running too lean which might make it hard to start. I will adjust the air screw and richen up the mixture to see if this helps.
