connecting rod play

Does side to side play on the connecting rod matter? It moves probably a quarter inch side to side but it is tight up and down.

Rod side play does matter but you should not have any up and down play. Side to side specs vary but .015"- .040" is considered ok with most brands (for single cylinder 2-strokes).

You should be ok as long as there is no up-down play...
