Hey guys how about we all start posting relivant tips and mods for
the CR500 so every one of us can benifit. From my own experience i have noticed most 500 owners like to tinker with there bikes
(my self including)but could we skip the my bikes faster than your bike crap it wont get us anywhere.

I have built and ride a 2001 with a 86 engine so far it is ported(ctracing drag),2001 spec talon/honda clutch, late model rhs engine cover and a rebuild and the susp has been revalved to suit me.
It's in bits at the moment for a full freshen up and repairs(regrease bearings 50hour piston change, new crankseals and case repair due to damage from a bent gear selector shaft)
I've ordered and waiting for a 41mm pwk carb and a decomp system so hopefully it will start a bit easier.while i'm at it i'm going to get a 2nd hand head machined to give me 11:1 uncorrected comp and a 2mm squish clearance.
as it is the power is smooth right the way through without a hit any where it is not scary at all untill you realise you have to stop.

Did you have to re-route the coolant lines? The '86 had different outlets.
My bro and I have been considering the same thing as we have a buch of
spare parts.

it's very easybut it would take two pages to explain in detail

1.bore out rear mount case inserts from 15mm to 17mm to accept late model
swing arm pivot
2.dont use 2001 rhs cover as water outlet point's up early style tilts back so it will clear late model exhaust.
3.all hoses match up spot on except w/pump to rear of barrel will need a custom hose i found a car heater hose with the right bend
4.custom top engine mount,i had 2001 plates that didn't fit, early style might
but i made them out of ally plate
5.early CDI is smaller so i silliconed it into late model rubber boot

Off the top of my head thats it..i did it a year ago
i used the 2001 pipe and it runs mint.

also the guide plate in the rhs case for the kick start gears has to be swapped for a late model one it is shorter and
it throws the gear into mesh sooner to give you a full kick and i used the late model kick start to clear the pipe.

this is the story.
a mate of mine bought a quad from CTRACING in the USA it was a TRX250R
with a 86 CR500 engine set up on alcohol for drag racing the engine looked
ratty when it turned up here.he wanted it show quality so we done a deal
he bought a 2001 CR500 kept the engine and i bought the bike and 86 engine
for a good price.since then the quad vibrated to much so the engine came out
and he bought a 2nd hand 2000 model minus engine(went to a 500AF project)
and sold it all to a mate of mine including the rad valve, programable ignition
39mmPWK and boysen engine covers)he doesn't like it because of the power
(it was his first bike)and it is currently for sale.and now the quad runs a complete 425 PSI set up$$$
but I'm happy now that my engine is coverted back to run on 98 octane fuel
none of them can catch me on the dunes.
