CR Question

Need some advice. Well first off I’m a somewhat of a novice rider now but still learning anyway I have 1999 CR125 that I have been practicing on for awhile now and I was thinking of moving up to a newer model CR125 like an 04 or 05 model just because the plastics looks better on the bike and I would think maybe a better engine and tranny. I know it sounds a bit dumb but I was curious as to the engine did it change in anyway, where there any engine, tranny problems in the newer engines. I’ve been real happy with my 99 CR and have had very little issues if any. And it has been a great practice bike. Last but not least; should I go with the CRF250 I’ve notice that the number of 2 stroke bikes @ the tracks there seems to be a decline and allot people say to switch to the 4 stroke. Sorry if this all this sounds kinda dumb but really I’m very new to the MX world and only been riding for almost 6 months now just practicing just about every day...Anyway any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. The newer model CR125 have changed alot the engine,frame,suspension,plastic have been changed.

You didn't indicate if you plan to race or not. If you plan to race, buy the 250F or you won't stand a chance. If your not going to race, the new CR should be a big improvement over you 99. There is plenty of hop up potential if your not tied down to displacement issues. It will probably take you longer to get bored with the 250F than the 125. The 250F will be a LOT harder to work on :bang: , and cost a LOT more in the long run :( . The 250F has a LOT more bottom end, a lot longer power band :nod: . The 125 probably has more grin factor :laugh: . You didn't indicate your size either. If you are on the small side, the 125 should be a good pick since your just beginning, if your medium to big look at the 250F. If your not racing, you may even want to look a 250 2-stroke, while it may be intimidating at first, at the rate your practicing you will quickly adapt, and you won't get bored.

Thanks for the replys.But no way i wont race im way to old Im 30 and im 5/8 180 rider and still trying to learn i started way to late..the 125 so true man after every ride i cant stop :laugh: i have growing really comfortable with her and cant stop riding but she still scares me @ times to me it seems so fast but i guess its because im still learning..Anyhow i have been considering the 250F but man im not sure how it would be the CR250 2 stroke i rode scared me to death then I rode my friends CRF450 damn that thing is a monster i have mad respect for those riders on those type of bikes man talk about power...Anyway I have yet to ride CRF250 but i guess only riding it will make my decision..Again thanks for the replys... keep um comming:cool:

I'm 42 and still actively compete, I still get a big grin when I let the youngsters know how old I am - don't let your age keep you from racing - it's a blast, heck one of my buddies is turning 50 this year and he still does most of the jumps on my practice track. Based on your stature and age, assuming your terrified of the 250 smoker, you'd probably be better off with the CRF250. Nice smooth power - no big surprizes, lots of tourque compared to the 125.

Even if you plan on racing the two stroke won't let you down. I compete against 250f's on my 125 and have beat several of them. It is 95% rider 5% bike. Plus the two stroke is easy to work on and cost way less for parts. Also....in the future...you can hop it up to a 144 and be more copetitive with the 250f's. There is a 52 year old that races all the time at our local track and usually gets the hole shot on his 250R. So age doesn't mean squat. Happy trails.

Reality check - I've got a CRF250 and a YZ155 - guess what, the CRF is way easier to ride - I love 2-strokes too - the biggest drawback on the 250F is working on it, it's a pain in the :moon:

An automatic car is easier to drive, but I buy stick shifts anyway . . . :)

I have heard that about the CRF250 also they told me that the 4 strokes do tend to burn oil real fast..

Haven't really noticed that, but we change it often, besides - 2 strokes burn more oil - that's what you put in the gas !
