Crankcase breather or engine problem?

I was riding a friend's '96 XR600R the other day and noticed the "problem". I was sitting on the bike (with it running), and reached down to pick up a glove from the ground. I felt air puffing against my air -- it was coming from what appears to be a crankcase vent hose.
Is this normal?

Yes it's normal, all four strokes do it to some degree, which is why the crankcase is vented in the first place. It's just more obvious when a 97mm piston is whipping up and down in the cases :) As an engine wears it's compression rings it tends to pressurize the crankcase even more than usual and the effect is increased.
