Customizing Stock pipe

HEy i know this sounds crazy but i have this idea that- well i was wondering if you could change your stock pipe into something useable. I mean the thing just goes to the junk heap and is never used again--i want to use it as a second pipe, i would like some kind of rev pipe or enbetween a rev and torque. I have seen changes made to help bottom end on a KX 100 fatty pipe, so i wondering if it could be done to change my stock pipe into something usable-- that stock pipe is built like a TANK- i know , i know its heavy but i dont really care. SOMEONE KNOWs what im talking about Please tell me if i need to revisit the looney bin Thanks

I HAVE JUST FINISHED GUTTING MY PIPE 91 KDX..ITS REALLY JUST A QUESTION OF HARMONICS. THERE IS GOOD INFO ON THE MAIN PAGE. BUT I CANT SAY HOW MUCH IT HELPS UNTIL I GET A REAR WHEEL

Hot ROd- what is in the pipe- IF i gut the thing will it change the performance? In the big part of the pipe right where it is seamed will cutting and making it shorter give it more bottom end or adding more pipe to it make it rev more?

I don't know where I found the article, I am still looking myself. But, there was an article or post that told how to carefully cut the pipe at the seams with a hacksaw, (mark the alignment of the old pieces carefully) then use strong pliers and possibly some force to rip the insides out of the pipe. Apparently it is like some sort of mesh, possibly similar to expanded metal. Then the pipe needs to be rewelded. Reviews suggested that many riders said the performance exceeded even that of an FMF gnarly or ProCircuit pipe. I am definitely going to try it on mine. I sure would like to find the origianal article again before I get started, since I haven't purchased an aftermarket pipe yet.

BY THE WAY BRAZING DIDNT WORK...AND GET READY FOR A MAJOR MESS.I TRIED OVEN CLEANER TO GET THE OIL OUT, BUT FINALLY AFTER I HAD IT CUT UPAND GUTTED. I BURT IT OUT WITH GAS. AND FORGET ABOUT TRYING TO CLAMP IT TOGETHER TO WELD,YOU HAVE TO HOLD IT BY HAND, VERY AWKWARD

Have your eyebrows grown back yet?

I have found that the best way to clean a two stroke pipe is to set it in a nice hot campfire for about an hour. Take it out, let it cool, and then tap it with a rubber mallet. All the gunk will fall right out.

Just make sure there are no aluminum parts attached as they will melt.

This mod only works on the 89-94 KDX's, sorry guy's.

Has anyone cut apart the 95 up to check it out? Just curious, I have a near new stock pipe for my 95.

When I bought my '95 last fall it came with the stock '95 pipe in a box (FMF Rev on the bike).

I expect it looks/is the same as all of the '95 and up?

I believe that the '95 to '03 pipes do not have the mesh in them at all so therefore you could not remove it. I am not positive could someone verify this?

I did the pipe mod (stage 2) on my 89200 SR and it really opened the engine up. Id say its making about another 5 or 6 bhp. It comes highly recommended. The only thing I found was the pipe rusted quicker so I had mine galvanized. No rot no fuss, the pipes stronger too.

Sorry but the mod doesn't work on 1995 to 2003 KDX pipes. Removing the inner wall on the 95+ pipes does very little for you.

well i just gutted my 01 pipe and i'm ready to stick it back on
i'm hopeing its better than stock--oh well if is not it was fun ripping it a part---now i can call that pipe mine why doen't this mod work

Even if gutting the pipe does not change performance, maybe changing some of the dimensions would alter the power band some. Fredette sells torque rings that fit in front of the exhaust port. That modification makes the engine put out more torque. You would think making the pipe shorter in certain areas would make it rev more. Has anyone ever tried this?

I've seen it done to a fmf fatty for a kx100-- i had the idea of lengthing my pipe in the fat part of it but i'm not really sure it would do anything.

I think the rev pipes have less width at the "fat" part of the pipe than the torque pipes. So maybe you could play with changing that part of the pipe and of course let us know what happened in the way of power output and powerband.
