In my case, 2003 XR 400 Honda, I snapped the longer of the two bolts holding the oil filter cover on. Bike has 75 miles on it. Funky torque wrench, now somewhere in the marsh out back. I can see the surface of the broken bolt through the screw shaft with a good flashlight. Note that since only the first fourth of the bolt is threaded, I don't think retraction of the threaded bit would be as much of a concern as would be if the entire length of the shaft was threaded. Took it to the dealer. They think the right side engine plate must come off so they order new gaskets apparently being shipped by camel from Mars. In the interim, I am thinking that I could avoid the cost of this degree of surgery if I could get a top notch local machine shop to attempt retraction using all customary methods, tap, LH bit, center drill, easy out, etc. But the target broken bolt piece in the shaft is about 5-7 cm deep. I don't know it there is an easy out that slender and that long? So should I just suck it up and let the dealer fix it at several hundred dollars repair getting the bike back in another 7 to 10 days??? Thanks, Tim
