my question is what does the pinging sound really sound like when a two stroke needs to be rebuilt, or what to look or feel for when its happening. Also any tips on jetting a 2 stroke 125 would help me to.. thanks

there is a good jetting links in a topic on the main page of the 2 stroke area on this forum, the thread is called "Jetting Links" it can very helpful.


if you are curious about when a top end needs a rebuild, perform a compression test. Pick up a compresion tester at an autoparts store, follow the instructions on it and compare the reading to what your manual says. Some other symptoms are that it lacks power, and/or realy easy to push down the kick starter.

a pinging sound from your bike will not come from it if it needs a top end rebuild. the only way to tell if you need a rebuild is to like dan druff said perform a compression test, or, what i think i will plan on doing is doing a top end rebuild once the bike takes more than a couple of kicks to start. I believe the pinging sound your referring to would be from not a high enough octane in your fuel.

Piston ring question

I posted something about my enggine pinging a couple hours ago. I tore my engine down and pretty much just looked at it.
so this is what i was wondering..... isnt the pinging just the piston rattling around in the cylinder? I just put in a new piston and ring in it before the season started, the piston looks fine but if i changed the ring would that possibly solve my problem?
Also after doing this am i really gonna have to buy all new gaskets or can i use the ones i had in there before since there still looking good?

ohhhhhhh ****..... i remember that i didnt have enough for the 91 octane stuff so i got the 89. Is this bad for my engine? Because i got a whole 20 liters of it?

Dont run the bike on fuel that causes pinging ( knocking ) it will damage the piston .

If i poured some octane booster into the gas would that make it safe enough to use in the bike?

Most "octane boosters" are about useless. They are very expensive and only raise the octane rating a few points. "Great," you say, "that's all I need." Unfortunately when they say "point" they mean 0.1, not 1.0, on the octane rating.

Before I tried any of that stuff I'd see if I could find some race gas. Mix it 50/50 with your current fuel (don't forget to add an appropriate amount of oil for the race gas you added) and that should bring the overall octane rating up enough to work and stop the detonation, allowing you to use up the fuel you have.

Barring that, I'd demote your fuel to weedwacker duty and buy new fuel. A few gallons of fuel is cheaper than repairing engine damage.

is purple gas, even tho it is a high octane (94) still bad for the motor

the pingin he hears could be the exhaust pipe as well
