If you use sand as filler for the RTV, run a magnet through it to pick up any iron that might be incorporated. The aquarium gravel should be good if you go that route as well. I've also seen clear resin at art supply stores. It's sometimes used to encapsulate a flower or some such item and turning it into a paperweight. The neat thing about that is it's clear.
