I'm thinking about buying a DRZ-400s. Just wondering how the bike behaves on the street in stock form. Is is way underpowered or is it adequate for moderate cruising? I get on interstates almost never and I don't stunt or try and go 160MPH I just want some real world opinions. Mainly I'd be cruising on backroads and hopefully hitting some enduros. Let me hear some opinions :) Thanks.

My good friend just sold his (Trying to get money for another street bike) and he like it very much. He was not agressive and did not take it on any real gnarly trails and such. His opinion, as voiced to me, is that it is a great light duty bike with more than adequate power for its intended use.

The best part is that there are tons of mods you can do and turn it into something far more, if you want.

My personal opinion is if your primary mission is trails/enduros and need the street legality...go for the DRZ400E. It is a better off road platform to begin with. Throw a dual sport kit on it and go.

To make the DRZ400S into a good off road mount it takes quite a bit as you really need to replace the CV carb with the e model carb (or other), get a plastic tank, and the suspension needs to be tweaked also. It is also a good bit heavier than an e model with a dual sport kit on it. The death wing tires on the "S" need to go immediately as they are neither good on or off road. They suck equally at either mission and will hurt you at the first opportunity.

Honest analysis will lead you to the right model choice as the "S" is the better base for 85-90 % road. As you go below the 85% on-road mark the "E" model gets more and more attractive. Quite frankly, if you want a 90% + street DRZ get the DRZ400SM and just get another set of wheels for off road.

For clarification (some will disagree), IMHO the "S" has a very limited niche market and does not excel at either road or off road. The DRZ400E is the off road/dual sport choice and the DRZ400SM is by far the preferred on road choice. Somewhere in between is the market for the "S".

I`ve myself have been seeking this information for awhile,Asking any dualsport questions on here generally is ignored. But I`ll tell ya that I nrecently sold my dr350s which was a great bike and the prospect of a little more power and sharper handling from the drz400s sounds great to me.By this time next summer I`ll have a new 400s to really try it out.Seems to me to be considered a really good dirt/street bike.people on here like to scoff at that statement but they`re still in kx rm cr yz etc. land. buy it love it !
Just don`t settle for a klr 650 as a inexpensive option not fit for dirt at all'
