It may not be legal without a battery. Check your local laws. Here in Kalifornia, all the battery does is keep the taillight on for the required amount of time. I think 10 min???
Everything else will run off of the charging system if you wire it that way. On the XR, I believe it is the blue wire that supplies the voltage to the lights. That is, if my memory serves me correctly. :)
