Teaching them to spell dirt correctly is step number one.
Second, visit the Michigan forum here on DRN and introduce yourself, there are a LOT of GREAT members in Michigan.
My first question is why are you trying to get them started into dirt bikes?
Do you ride? Family friends ride?
Dirt bike riding can be a great family activity. Buy Mom a quad if she doesn't like bikes. Join a club or make some friends who also ride so you can spend a day or weekend with friends.
For your kids you will want to pick up a couple of small bikes, like a Honda 50. How big is the 8 year old? He will outgrow a 50 pretty quickly but if he isn't too big it would be good to start him on it. The 5 year old should be good on the 50 for a few years, and then he can get his brother's hand me down bike. (poor kid may never get a new bike.....)
Most important is to start off with all the proper safety gear. Helmet and goggles are a must. Gloves and boots are highly recommended. Chest protector and a neck roll are really good ideas. If they ride in rocky terrain knee pads can really help out.
Other than that, just ride.
The 5 year old will probably be happy riding a little circuit within eyesight of the truck. The 8 year old will want to start venturing off onto trails or hitting the jumps at the track.
Going on "family" rides is great, but you will want to encourage the kids to ride with peers at their level. This makes a circle of friends very handy, so the 5 year old can ride circles on a flat track with his friend while the 8 year old pushes his limits on something more challenging.
