I have a 97 200 with fmf torque pipe, DFII, and drilled airbox. I got the mo better everywhere porting and requested to run on pump gas. The bike makes great power everywhere I notice the biggest improvements in the low to mid range. I had to change my riding position to try and keep the front end down. Now the down side I believe it is pinging I think i'm not really sure though. I havn't played with the jetting a whole lot yet but i have richined the main jet I'm currently running 160 main 45 pilot and the needle is a R113K in the 4th clip position. I'v burned the tip off two spark plugs now. I went to the local shop and showed them the plugs and they thought it was detenation. They just suggested I try race gas in it. I don't know what i should do I dont want to have to fork out the money to run race gas. Here is a link to a pic of the plugs http://groups.msn.com/KDXRidersCommunity/motoridersbikepics.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=916
If you can't click on it highlight and copy paste it to the address bar. I ran the BR8ES in the bike for awhile thinking there was a jetting problem then put the B9ES in and that one fowled too. What kind of jetting you guys use for the 225? Is there any way to get rid of pinging without running race gas or you guys think that would be the best thing to do. Any help or advice would be great.
Thanks, Braden

Sounds like detonation. You might try to run a 50/50 mix with race/premium unleaded. This works for a lot of folks. After all, it's cheap insurance when compared to buying new engine components.

While my jetting specs won't be right for your bike, since they are set up quite differently, they might give you a good idea of what range you might want to be in.

Quick summary: My bike was originally a 200, now a EG225 mo-better porting, set up for pump gas. I have a Pro Circuit pipe and silencer, airbox lid cut, V-force delta 2 reed cage, reeds set on low tension, stock 35mm carb. Elevation is approximately 1600 feet where I ride.

Now the jetting. In the summer, temps between 70-85 degrees, I have usually run a 155 main and a CEL needle in the middle position. I never have got the pilot perfect - I've been running a 40, but I think a 42 would be better for me. The bike runs quite crisply on that jetting.

I seem to get a detonation type sound when running at high speeds and have to reduce throttle opening in order to maintain speed (i.e. at almost no load or deceleration). However, I do not have a problem under acceleration or wide open running, and I do not burn the electrodes off of spark plugs. I've just learned to live with the occasional noise for now.

Anyway, good luck.

Had Eric upgrade my 200 to a 225 with mo better porting. I also use an FMF rev with DFII reedcage. I requested pump fuel.

I had a lot of pinging in the beginning, no one could help me. I tried running larger jets but that made the bike run noticably rich and boggy. I tried playin with the timing but that didn't help. I measured my cylinder pressure @ 210psi but noone could tell me if that was too high for pump fuel.

Finally I bought a can of C12 and all my problems disappeared. I mixed it 50/50 with super unleaded. With the pinging gone I was finally able to jet the bike properly.

main 152
pilot 42
needle CEL-4

It would be interesting if you could check your cylinder pressure for comparison.

Once I got the jetting right the bike absolutly rips, plenty of stump pulling power down low and revs like a 125 on top.

Have you checked your timing? See link and search for "spark timing" Link is a little out-dated but still applies.

I finaly got the problem solved. I bought some race gas and mixed it 50\50 with 93 pump. That got rid of all the pinging, and now it is running good. All i have to do now is figure out the jetting. As for as compresion goes I am not sure what it is. I will probally get a hold of a tester here in a couple of days and report back. I was also wondering if anyone has tried mixing the race gas at 3\4 pump and 1\4 race, because that stuff is expensive(about $35 for 5 gallons). Thanks for all the help.

I get slight pinging with less than 50/50 under extreme conditions. I always run 50/50 now.

Tried that octane stuff called Hitrate but it had the same results as running 25/75 race/pump, slight pinging. Also turned my plug yellow which made it harder to jet.

Once you feel how strong the bike is with high octane and proper jetting you wont wanna go back.

If you cant afford 50/50 and paid to run on pump then I would send the head back for machining. This is what I was going to do until I got addicted to the power.

Good luck

Well...I talked to EG today before sending mine off for the conversion, and he recommended the low-mid porting...anyone have any experience with it? I asked about the mo better and he said it would take the hit out of it. Guess we'll see what it's like when it comes back. :thumb: BTW...they have a 3-4 week turnaround as of today.

What was his basis for him recommending the low-mid versus the mo-better?

"I asked about the mo better and he said it would take the hit out of it"

Don't you want to take the mid hit and transition to a more linear power delivery...

Thanks Mike.

All I can figure is the 200/225 is a "tweener"...not a 125, but not quite a 250...and if you think about it, the 250's have a brutal power delivery, which makes me think the mo better would be perfect for them to even them out (mine has a nice mid-range, but not what I call brutal by any means). Bottom line...I'm not sure why he told me that. It seems everyone in here who has done the 225 has done the Mo Better porting and likes it.

Well, I just got my cylinder/head back from EG's Forward Motion and thought I'd post some pics for those interested...btw, I ordered up the bottom/mid porting with mine and if I'm looking at it right, there was no head work done, but the base got about 4-5mm shaved off. The ports look like they were just cleaned up for the most part...the exhaust port may have been enlarged a bit. Anyone who's had the mo' better everywhere done remember what was done to theirs...just curious.

Broke the bike in today and I'm not really sure how I feel about the low-mid porting. My brother has a 220 and mine now feels flatter than his. I haven't actually had it on any hills or in the woods yet to see how it does, but it is definitely strong down low and VERY flat on top. Glad these things come with a 1 year warranty for alterations. I'm waiting on my desert pipe to get here, then we'll see what happens.
