I'm having a problem with my engine. It ran excellent until I rebuilt it and now it makes a funny noise. After it is good and hot the engine makes a knocking noise when I coast in gear from a high RPM. The idle also stays high and knocks after coming to a stop. If I hold the front brake and slip the clutch (to put a load on the engine) it will come down to a normal idle and the knocking will go away. The problem seems to be getting worse and I can hear kind of a chatter at medium-high RPM's. I've tried richening up the jetting everywhere and nothing really helps. Somebody on here said that I probably have an air leak somewhere but I haven't been able to find anything (but I haven't used a pressure gauge). I just tore the engine back down and didn't see anything obvious but I am going to get out feeler gauges and check for the things being out of spec. Anybody have any idea's? (I tried retorqueing the cylinder bolts and reed valve bolts before the teardown....didn't help!) Also note that I went from a stock piston to a Weisco pro-lite.
I know I will need new gaskets but if I take the rings off to re-check the end-gap clearence should I just buy new ones?
