Engine numbers

I have what I belive is a 1991 YZ250 but don't know for sure because the original owner powder coated over the the VIN on the head tube and only gave me a bill of sale. I do have the numbers on the cases on the engine, is there a way to tell from them? Thanks!

Any Yamaha dealer should be able to tell you or the first few pages of your manual.
