I went to knock out the baffle on my klx 400, but realized if I take the baffle out I also remove the spark arrestor. Is there any way to take out the baffle and leave the spark arrestor?

I forgot to say that I am not that worried about noise. My buddy has a 2001 wr426 and removed the baffle and it sounds badass or at least I think it does.

Take a hole saw and cut it out. That way the spark arrestor stays in place. Do a search on this. There are tons of posts about jetting options too. Thumpertalk.com has very detailed instructions on it. mnelson has a web site dedicated to this. All the mods are easy to do (hell, I managed to pull it off) and well worth the effort.

Stock exhausts without baffles are excessively loud most of the time, but I guess you already knew that.

Hey stud boy, nice opinion.
I agree with you, it will get a little louder...as a matter of fact it will go from 90.5 db at 1/2 throttle to 92.75 db at 1/2 throttle.....on a DRZ/Klx. Measured at a ccc run in Michigan last year, sound meter about a foot away from the pipe.
I wonder how loud a kx is ;)
If you want to talk about excessive, I say pick on some of the YZ4s. They make your ear drums ring in stock form!

If the sound meter was only 12 inches away, then it was done improperly.  Sound waves, regardless of their intensity, at low frequencies, require a greater distance to actually develope.  Therefore, the intensity or db level was not accurate.  Keep the cork in it.  Noise IS the number reason riding areas and tracks are getting closed.

I'm with you on that one BSWIFT.

Wolf, I can tell you one thing, and that is that to the ear (I have NOT measured with a DB meter) my KX with my freshly packed standard PC silencer (I keep it that way) is easily half as loud from 10 feet away than my friends 2002 XR250 with the middle taken out of the endpiece (like what you are describing to do) on his stock silencer!  This is especially at low/mid throttle openings.   I would consider the XR's uncorked exhaust to be comparable to a stock 426 silencer after a couple of months use.
Wolf, I am not making fun of you or calling you stupid but noise is an issue and I was simply stating the facts.

Before you drill the restrictor, unbolt the endcap and run it like that. It's only negligably louder and sounds like butt. It is not deep and throaty, just noisier and sounds like it's about to fall apart. The power gains from this mod versus the horrid sound is not worth it IMHO. Now a DRZ with an aftermarket pipe is a whole different ball of wax.

I personally am looking at the FMF Powercore 4

The place to ask would probably be over at www.thumpertalk.com They have a very active DRZ 400 forum.

There are so many options for pipes for drz/klx I'm not even going to suggest anything. BUT there is another option for your stock pipe that IS reversable...take off the endcap via the 3 bolts and stick a few washers between the pipe and endcap to space it out a bit, and shove the bolts back in. Then if you want silent mode again just take out the washers. Easy squeezy. ;)
