My exhaust packing is to be done and has been neglected for a while. Does this affect anything apart from the sound? I have a pro circuit shorty.

Yes, I called FMF to see if removing the packing would increase power, and they said NO that it will ruin my top end power. So replace your packing with whatever Pro Circuit recommends.

Ok but I don't know for how long there has been no packing because I bought the bike not a long time ago. If I put back some packing will the top end power, as you mentioned, come back to normal?

I have the same Pro Circuit Shorty...I need to replace my packing but the one in it looks like a roll of fiberglass wrapped in some kind of net and the new ones to buy look like a bag of fiberglass. Am I looking at the wrong stuff?

i had that same stuff on my yz when i repacked it. i just went to honda and bought the shreds of fiberglass and repacked with that. The bike seems to run great with no power difference. and it is really easy to do.

packing = backpressure ,and yes this does affect the perfomance

it is a fiberglass material pack it tight, clean the carbon off the tube first

There is a difference between 2 and 4 stroke packing, but I don't know of any adverse effects of using the wrong one. For 2 strokes, the packing is in sheet form, and you wrap it around the baffle. A couple wraps of tape will help keep it together during installation. I think the shredded stuff is supposed to be used in four strokes.

Never tried it, but I hear it blows out the back much quicker because it's not as dense.
