FMX questions for Hollywood script

What's up, guys --

I'm currently finishing the script for what will become a Hollywood movie.

It has a critical FMX scene, and I know very little about FMX. So I appeal to you guys to please help me fill in these blanks so it's accurate.

1) This high school junior is trying to pull a trick of cool enough magnitude that these people will let him enter a major competition. What would be a good trick? It should be impressive, but not totally impossible for this guy.

2) His buddy thinks he's planning to go for a less-cool trick, and is shocked when he finds out what it's really going to be. What could that less-cool trick be?

3) Unfortunately, the guy messes up the trick. Lands badly, I suppose. What specifically could he do wrong (like not getting front wheel down fast enough, or something)?

4) And as a result, he wrecks his bike badly enough that he has to go fix it in the school auto shop. What could specifically have happened to his bike?

This is probably really easy for you guys, and you can come up with this stuff off the top of your head. Hah hah, for me, it's really not so easy!

I truly appreciate your help, and wish all thanks and all my best.

hey bud, love the idea, not many people throw fmx into the mix

for a high school junior, i think a simple backflip would be sufficient

and with a back flip, he can hit the kicker ( ramp) and jump a lil farther than expected landing flat on the ground. snapping his front forks right off his bike. but in order for it to be realistic he would have to break his arm at least

again love the idea, and if you need more help. you got all of us here

good luck with the project

As far as bike damage I would have him land on level ground over-shooting the landing ramp and thus breaking either the front and back wheel hubs or just the just rear wheel hub.The scene can show the rear hub with lets say 10-15 spokes broken off where they attach to the hub.I would have the tire rim undamaged thus leading up to the scene where your guy is lacing up a new hub and spokes to his rim.A do-able high school project. Eric Gorr is the guy you want if you want to do a close up of a set of hands doing the work.

Just feature the highschooler as being Scott Murray. The guy has a one trick arsenal a double backflip. Used a video to bargain his way into the Xgames last summer and did break his bike trying to land it. Now he is catching his 15minutes of fame about 20 seconds a time by travelling around trying to repeat his one succesfull landing. He always seems to come close but can not quite land it

Hey, Sounds like a great movie.

A back flip would be great to do as a junior. But if you want it to me more... impressive you can do a Double back flip, or A single back flip with a trick.

You know.. something like his first run..
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FYgWZHbhe30&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/FYgWZHbhe30&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

But that would be AMAZINGLY difficult. But awesome!

Or maby pick something out of here.

He could not finish the rotation and land to early (far on front tire.) break a rim, and bend the front forks, bend handle bars and or break the triple trees, and breaking the front fender off. Oh and he HAS to hurt himself (broken arm, wrist.. something, to make it more realistic.)

Oh, and make sure its a Kawasaki 2-stroke ;)

Thank you all so much for your help! I truly appreciate it, and now we're going to have a badass and accurate scene--all thanks to you.

Hah hah, Rich--this is the real deal. Fortunately for your future shop-teacher role, I'm not the CD and don't make casting decisions.

Based on what you guys told me, and what I think would look coolest on screen, I think I'm going to have him go for a single backflip plus a trick.

He can mess up by not finishing the rotation and landing too early--that is, too far forward on the front tire. He will break a rim, bend the front forks, break the triple trees, and break off the front fender.

I'm afraid he can't break any body parts, 'cause we need him intact in the future scenes. Hah, I guess he is just super-lucky.

Please tell me, and then we've got it:

1) Does this sound all right?

2) What would be a good trick for him to go for along with that backflip?

3) His buddy needs to think he's gonna do a less-cool trick. What's a good, less-cool trick that his buddy could expect him to do, so he can be surprised when it's the backflip + something?

4) This is the ultimate moron question on my part, but I figure I better ask just to make sure. ;) Am I correct in thinking if he lands badly like we said above, that means he has NOT completed the trick successfully?

Thank you all so much. You are seriously rock.

For authenticity it is never really a great idea to write about things you don't know, haven't experienced, can't imagine.

With all the dvds of Nitro Circus, with xgames, with the Speed Channel, YouTube, books on fmx, magazines on fmx, the fmx website, these little tidbits can't possibly be as seriously rockin' as you'd like.

You have nice manners, but seem to be lacking in the right kind of industriousness and critical judgment, whether a writer or bser.

I'm afraid you are going to be very disappointed with Hollywood if this is the extent of your imagination and research.

This script was already done at last years X Games when that guy sent in the video of him doing a double backflip in his back yard and then he crashes doing it at the X Games.

He has since been contracted by the Metal Mulisha to do 24 doubles on their tour. He recently crashed 2 consecutive attempts at one show. However, he has landed it several times.

Late again to the party :nener: BTW he claims to have landed it many times but the goof that is always jumping around pumping the crowd for him is about the only witness. Scott seems to be a one trick pony I would love to see if he really has anything else

Well as much as I fall for the spambots around here, I am suprised I didn't fall for it either. I guess the whole "writing a hollywood script" thing flagged it for me like it did Rich. LOL Now I'm just waiting for this ass clown to come back and say he needs about 50 extras in the FMX scene and he knows DRN is the place to come for dirtbikers to be in movies. LOL

My uncle saw him at an event in Grand Rapids and said he did a lot of different tricks and landed the double.

There was a Youtube clip of him doing it on the new YZ250 that they gave him after the X-Games. I saw it posted on another site about 3 or 4 months ago.

Being late is the story of my life :)

After years of torture from Gomer my mind is perfectly fine... or so he says. He's always saying "do this Ivan... remember last time you said you don't mind."

I'll leave what that thing is he has me do up to your imagination. Maybe you can even write a Hollyweird script :)

Sorry I'm not already a moto expert. I was given two months to develop this entire script for fall '09 release. Projects are turned over on a very strict deadline, and there's no time for writers to become personal experts in medicine, or law, or FMX.

That's completely unrealistic. But we know what we don't know, so we ask experts like you guys, which is certainly more than enough for a quick scene that's one minute out of one hundred.

Most people are very happy to help. And the doctors don't usually call us assclowns for trying to learn something. I actually thought the cartoon was funny, but seriously--that's an insanely dickhead move when someone asks you four simple questions.

It's a terrible advertisement for your community and your sport, and it's a miracle any newbies bother to penetrate the instant and unwarranted cloud of paranoia and defensiveness.

I checked the profiles of the people who responded. Interestingly enough, the younger people seemed to have been cool and helpful, while the older people, um. . . .

Anyway, I combined the useful feedback with other sources, and this scene is now done. If it's not something you're proud to see on the screen--well, you didn't answer the questions, did you? Thank you very much to those who helped, and peace.

Mr. Blue Ice guy,

Part of the reason you got the responses you did is because there is some modest tongue-in-cheek ribbing that goes on betwixt the regular dirt bike crowd and the freestyle community. And, just like when the Beatles played Ed Sullivan, the young people "get" the FMX, while the old guard somewhat tolerates it, but mostly loathes the lifestyle.

Another reason for the doubtfulness is the prevalence of MX-themed flicks that are completely and totally unrealistic. A true fan just can't put up with "Supercross: The Movie" when something as special and amazing as "On Any Sunday" or "From Dust to Glory" is out there, telling a TRUE story that totally blows everything else out of the water.

Take everything with a grain of salt, as this is the interweb, and we're all just having fun. If and when your movie comes out, depending on whether it becomes a blockbuster or a direct-to-DVD, there may be more support for ye.

and yes, I think FMX guys, as well as anyone under 22, is a goob

I thought he sounded pretty genuine myself.A honest question deserves an honest answer. If you really want people to root for this underdog rider, put him on a real clapped out bike (that would be a old ratty looking bike). The other top riders can make fun of him to even think of doing any tricks on it.
