Ok, I was in a dealership today picking up a bike for my son (Yamaha TTR90E) and I was talking to one of the sales people there. I asked about the difference between a two and four stroke in the same size, KX 250 vs. KXF250. He told me that there is no question about it, the four stroke kicks the **** out of the two stroke. Is there any truth to this?

I know that this was most likely brought up in the past but, I am curious.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Jeff

Yep, he's right. A 250 two stroke runs like a Model A ford and a 250 four stroke like a Viper, no comparison. The 4 will win every race no matter who's riding it.

That was one bright salesman you were talking to. He know's his stuff.

Umm your sales guy is an idiot - he's trying to make more money for the dealership in the coming months and years . . .

People will undoubtedly criticize me for being a 2 stroke guy, but on a cc for cc basis, there's no comparison.

Stock 250 2 stroke = 43-47 HP.

Stock 250 4 stroke = 30-33 HP.

Do you think the 4 stroke kicks the $%#$ out of the 2 stroke?

Further, the 4 stroke is a more complicated design - picture a small Formula 1 motor and you get the idea. The 2 stroke is simpler, more efficient, and will generally require less maintenance and cost.

The 4 strokes are the flavor of the week - and they are undoubtedly high tech and cool - but there's still no comparison on an equal displacement basis.

IMO, the only reason anyone is using a 4 stroke in MX is because they have a double displacement advantage.

Ask any of the 4 stroke guys here if they would race a 250 4 stroke in the 250 2 stroke class.

They wouldn't (although they'll probably try to avoid answering the question) - but they will certainly race the 250 4 stroke in the 125 2 stroke class - and they'll go on and on about how much better the 4 strokes are - and they're right- the 4 stroke is better - but only if you let it have the extra cc's.

BTW, the 4 stroke equals more money to the parts and labor departments of the dealership because it could cost $2000.00 to rebuild if you blow the motor.

I hope that was sarcasm . . .

Robwbright,

Yea, I thought that was sarcasm too.

I was thinking along the same line as you when that sales guy told me that, to tell you the truth, I lost respect for him.

I would also imagine that a lot has to do with the skill of the rider.

Dieselhead, I love two-stroke bikes, they sound cool as heck and they go like a bat out of hell, great fun to ride. I grew up riding dirt bikes and I missed them a lot but now I have introduced my family to them and got back to my roots as well.

Thank you for your posts.

Sincerely,

Jeff

Wait, you were serious with this? I thought you were just trying to be funny starting something in the 2 stroke forum. I guess it is possible for a salesman to be that stupid, but wow that is really stupid.

Rob, check my sig and your question will answer itself.

Ask my son and he will tell you there seems like a heck of a lot more difference than just 12 horsepower. He was shocked the first time he jumped off his 250f and tried my 250, he quickly understood how much difference there is.

I would walk out the door the minute some salesman made a statement that stupid.
