Fule mixture, 32 to 1 ???

All,
My book is telling me 32:1, but I am reading here that a lot of riders are going up as high as 45 or 50:1. What does thining the ratio do for me and what harm am I doing to the engine? Anyone?

Rick,
I'm no wrench-head, but seems to me if you are running stock jetting on your bike, then you should follow the recomended ratio, otherwise you would be running far too rich at 45 or 50:1.

Like I said, take that with a grain of salt, I'm quite new to this and know very little...

I am a long ways from stock, and running a rad valve. I am new at this but I am under the impression that rich or lean has to do with air mixture not oil? Am I off base, and if not I wonder how ratio of oil efects performance?

Oil quality...If you run synthetic you can mix it at a higher ratio (50-1) you can move a little from 32-1, I use Yama Lube at 40-1

any idea what kind of benefits you ge from this? (Is there a mathematical reason to change the ratio?)

Mixing for instance at 40 or 50:1 gives you more gas in your mixture than at 32:1. Less oil more gas... therefore your gas/air mixture will be richer.

Rich can apply to the air/fuel mixture or your gas: oil mix. Here we are obviously talking about gas: oil. Basically, 32:1 means 32 parts of gas mixed with 1 part of oil. The reason to run leaner at 40:1 or 50:1 is to foul plugs less, and I think it also makes more power. The oil is used to lubricate the top end, so you need to run enough oil to keep from wearing things out too quickly. With todays synthetic oils you have much more latitude. I would recommend around 40:1 unless you are racing and want to have the thing kick ass for a little while and then rebuild it often.

New guy sticking his nose in here, be careful how lean you go with the oil mixture, you usually don't know you are lean until you are putting a rod in it. remember the oil is the only thing lubing your rod bearing, and piston pin. i usually stick to the 32 to 1, and use a clean burning synthetic oil, so you get less residue to clog stuff up( I. E . your power valve.) I prefer KLOTZ, but any modern synthetic oil will do. Yamalube is very good also. Maxima, and Belray are good, as is Amsoil. I have always stuck to one oil, sometimes mixing oils is not the best practice.
