FZ1 is King of Street (again)!

Three weeks ago I went out to Carolina Dragway near Jackson, SC and got King of Street in the bike class...

I went back out last night and got it again!

Much the same as last time, I ran the stock wheelbase and my times were directly dependent on how well I could control the wheelies I was getting off the start. I was running anywhere from 11.80s when I wheelied:



...to 11.27 when I was able to keep the front down:



There were six of us in the bike class, but one guy smoked his clutch during practice and didn't run the eliminations. Last time they let the first guy signed up have a bye in the first round since we had an odd number. I got there early and was first to sign up this time. Joke was on me as the *last* bike to sign up got the bye run this time. First race I lined up with a guy on a ZX14 who dialed 10.00. I dialed 11.60 figuring I could run that even if I wheelied. If I didn't wheelie, I could hit the brakes on the other end. I wheelied some, but not too badly. I did have to back out a little to get it down, but then had a decent run (considering) going. The ZX14 redlit so we both ran them all the way out. If he hadn't redlit, we both would have broken out, him by more:



Since I had the best reaction time in the first round, I got a bye in the 2nd round. I kept the front end down and had a good run (for me) with an 11.34.



In the final I lined up with the son of the guy I raced in the first round. His son was also on a ZX14. I knew he could run 9.80 or even better but he dialed a 10.25. I'm pretty sure he was thinking that he would run me down, then coast just ahead of me to win. Even though I had just run an 11.34, I left my dial-in at 11.60, thinking that I would make him run me down, then force him to break out by staying ahead of me. Well, I wheelied off the line, so there went the thoughts of trying to make him break out. I got it back under control and about the time I hit 4th I looked back. He seemed way back so I got on the brakes. I looked back again and he was MUCH closer. I got back on the gas, then the brakes again just before I crossed the finish.



I honestly didn't know if I had broken out or not until I got around to where we pick up our times slips. I was surprised to see that I won, but even more surprised to see a perfect reaction time!

Next time I plan to put the swingarm extensions on and hopefully run more consistent times around 11.0.

I'm really impressed that you can have that light of a touch to dial in the time like that. I'd probably end up with a 13.0!

what are you running for sprockets compared to stock?

-1/+2 on the sprockets, but they didn't seem to help. On the contrary, I feel like I'm shifting too much, now. About the time I get near the end I'm where I should be shifting to 6th, but I leave it in 5th and am just over 10K at 120 or so. You would probably run in the 10s between 125 and 130. My weight seems to make a difference on the top end.

With the 6" swingarm extensions it is so much easier since you can launch as hard as you want with little danger of looping.

I'm -1 on the front, it's nice in some respects and so is the close ratio trans (good for drags) but for the kind of riding I do, a wide ratio 5 speed would actually be better. I'm so tired of shifting this bike I shift two gears at a time and it still doesn't seem like much of a jump. Really, the trans is my only significant gripe against this great bike.

I really like the trans in my friend's ST1300
