I run about 4-inches of race sag and about 1-inch of static sag. If you adjust the spring pre-load to obtain the correct race sag, and the spring is too light for your weight, then the spring will have too much stored energy. Too much preload on the spring will then translate in the bike not liking you very much. You can do a search in the forums on setting the proper "sag".
