Gearbox oil...is ATF ok?

Guys,
I picked up my "new to me" 2000 KDX 200 on Saturday. I'm replacing fluids, cleaning filter, changing plugs, cleaning carb, rejetting, etc.
When I was younger we used ATF in the 2-stroke gearboxes. Is this still ok to do? Any particular one? The Mobil 1 synthetic ATF is considered a good fork oil in streetbikes...

I have run Type F ATF in my gearboxes for years with excellent results :thumb:

Last couple of changes I have used good ol' WalMart ATF type F and I swear it works better than the Mobil One 15-50. Only thing is it seems to be mighty thin when it comes out of tranny at change time. Maybe I'm just used to regular motor oil. Does anyone else think this too? Works flawlessly though.
