Help! need to bulk up a bit

Yes this may sound weird, but i want to gain some weight. I'm currently 6' 1 and 155lbs but i'am 16. I'd like to get another 15- 20 lbs on me. What can i do?. I do push-up's and sit ups , chin up's at home and i ride my mtn bike alot. I dont think that stuff will help since people usually do that stuff to loose weight.
Can anyone help me:)

Hey, what I am doing is working out for a hour a day at the gym. I am also 16. Check out menshealth.com for some bulking info. weight lifting is what you will have to do.. to get there faster get some creatine suplements from GNC.. hope i can help :aj:

I can eat as many Nachos as i can eat every day and all the ice cream in the world and i still dont gain weight. I dont really do that though.

I got the same problem man. Im 6"2' and only 160lbs. I checked with my doctor how much someone like me should weight and i was shocked. Pro athletes way around 200-210lbs being 6" plus. She said that is perfectly healthy to be 6"2' and 200. I want to be 180 though. I am going to try creatine and working out vigoursly.

Eat. Seriously. No amount of weight-lifting will bulk you up unless you eat a whole lot more than you do now. Eating healthy, protein-rich food such as chicken and fish will help.

If you do get to the gym, don't bother with the small crap like bicep curls and leg extensions. Squat, chin-ups (add weight if you can do much more than ten reps), bench, that's what you gotta do. Keep the reps around 8-10 to gain mass.

ah yes, as many of you know i've comitted my life to helping young people, there was that varsity cheerleader clean up day at my ranch and..well you get the idea. to be bigger, yes, the easy answer(you'll love this) is genetics, don't thank me thank your recruiter, er, i mean God. the other easy answer,(and i'm thinking you'll love this even more) is, you're to young to bulk up.(send all replies to..) ok,that being said, hear me now and remember this later, stay away from all testosterone boosting suplements,and or roids(such a crude word) there is empirical evidence that,not only while on will this suplimentation shut down your testicular axis, it will adversly affect it for the rest of your life. so there, drugs are bad,ok,don't do drugs. now to help, there are many ways to "bulk up" but a tried and true method is this. eat to get big,lift to get big,sleep to get big. eat extra protien, don't go overboard, the liver gets a lil' stressed breaking down alot of protien, but i'd say two protien drinks a day will be ok,add some branched chain amino acids,and slightly increase your caloric intake,nachos? why? try candy bars,er i mean "protien bars" same same on some. lift heavey, a good starting point is a weight you can control for no less than 3 reps no more than 6 (rule of thumb) and do good forced reps, you will need a good spotter for this,but nobody rides alone ,right? don't lift heavey alone, do forced reps. you can finish your heavey lifting with light high rep stuf to "blast " the pump too. oh yeh,don't forget the cardio,this is not the only contraversial thing if said so far, but this will get the most "that's wrong" replies, it goes back to the empirical evidence thing. and rest..rest lad,rets...lift heavey on one part of the body only once a week, not every other day, not twice weekly, once, your body can and will in most instances take 5 days to recover fully. here's another lil' tid bit for ya, your body produces growth hormone while you are in REM sleep (that's why you see body builder use some rec drugs befor bed, i'm not going to mention them because"drugs are bad,ok", but if you've wonderd about it,that's why) and ofcourse drink at least 1 gal of water a day. these things will work, there is no substitute for hard work. now, last but not least, there are many highschool coaches that will dissagree with alot of what i said, but hey, ignorance is bliss. they train young men for sport and fun, i trained young men because our lives depended on it.there! btw, mens health is for late middle aged men who marry young and play too much golf, get some harder core material, or a more sane mag is muscle media, i would HIGHLY recomend buying Arnolds' encyclopedia of bodybuilding, buy it, read it, do it. some people don't fill out untill early 20s late teens, i didn't start filling out until 19 or so. don't get discouraged.and this garbage about pro atheletes weighing 250 or so, look at a 20 yr old, ranger,marine, seal, or special forces troop, that's what an explosive strength,arobically conditioned "pro" looks like. good luck. btw,kwetchyer bitchin' you guys are 6ft or above, i'm a pewee 5'8" maybe 5'9", nuthin' i can do about that. whew.

Then you can get in on weight loss contest;)

There is some good advice posted here as far as weight lifting, eating RIGHT(proteins and carbs) and supplements. Nutrition is extremely important when trying to gain mass. I don't think you want the extra weight just to weigh more, if so, then follow the nachos and ice cream diet or why not just strap a 50 lb weight to your back, you'll get the same result, more weight and no more strength! Weight lifting is what you want. Concentrate on the large muscle groups such as the chest, back and legs, but don't leave arms out or you'll look funny. Creatine is an amazing supplement. I went from a 225 bench press to 294 in about 4 weeks! I had to stop taking it though because of the drawbacks which I felt could be dangerous, CRAMPS! I got some serous muscle cramps and I got to thinking, 'My heart's a muscle, what if it cramps?'. Enough to scare me away, plus I was tired of waking up in pain in the middle of the night. If you do decide to try it, drink LOTS of water. Arnold's book would be a good idea because if anybody knows about bulking up, its Arnold. Remember muscle weighs more than fat! Not really sure why you would want to gain weight anyway, only slows you down when it comes to riding. The pros and their sponsors spend thousands of $$ in trick titanium parts to shave an ounce here and there and you want to gain weight?

I didn't day i have a nachos and ice cream diet.That was an example:) . I eat lots and healthy . I didn't say i wanted fat either. I know muscle weighs more than fat. I just thought a little weight(muscle) could do me some good about throwing the 250 around a little better. And trust me 20 years down the road i wont be wishing to loose weight:confused: . Theres no one in my family thats over 200lbs.

Good point, sfc crash. Your heart is a pump, & when you add all that extra muscle mass, you're adding a lot more work for your "pump". It needs to excercise & grow, too. Cardio is absolutely necessary for gaining muscle mass. I heard long ago (and now don't remember the specifics or source) that you'll only be able to add a certain amount of muscle in relationship to the size/condition of your heart. Can anyone back that up?

I worked out hard for 2 years. Got up every morning & hit the gym with a fellow DRN'er. Did cardio, then heavy lifting. 5 days a week. I maybe gained 15-20 lbs of muscle in those 2 years. Shaved off quite a bit of body fat, too. I peaked at 5'11, 185 lbs. That just didn't sound right, I thought I should have ballooned out like Ahnold. Genetics, I suppose. Now, 3 years later, I've lost nearly all that muscle, & gained a bunch more fat in its place- 5'11, 195 lbs. Yuck.

zio, budd, no spelling errors? ha! stir things up. dude, trust me on this, you never lost any muscle, unless you spent some time at aschwitz.oooh, nazi reference, bad bad. have you ever heard of muscle memory, yes ,good. anyway i was at the store today..ha! i am the funniest guy i know. your muscle will hold more fluid at max(don't split hairs with me here people) so, when you quit "demanding" that your muscle work at a certain level,it did. it quit being "maxxed out"( i'm warning you people) so you lost strength and volume, fluid in the muscle makes you strong, ergo, creatine (stop the atp stuff, cause it's mostly a fluid thing) so the moral to the story ZIO, is you can get back to that point rather quickly, you've got the same muscle mass, it's just not working at max. plus,zio,c'mon, anyone with the wit you have, it's all good.:moon: ha! i wanted to do a "nice"smily for ya, but i couldn't bring myself to.:p

There, how was that, bud? ;) Muscle memory, yeah, I've seen it in action. A guy joined us in our routine, he hadn't worked out for years & looked like a parking meter. Two months later, he was a friggin' ape (almost). Made me so mad.

I'm hitting Bally's w/ a 2 week free membership to try it out. They have a location right around the corner from work & will do the lunch thing. I prefer the smaller Spandex-free gyms, but the chains have shut them down.

I have some creatine powder & Amino Acid supplements left over & will use 'em.

Squats and milk

The old time prescription for weight gain was squats and milk. Heavy squats, benches and rows (or power cleans) coupled with protein and sufficient heathy calories produces results.

..well yeh, but winning races is hard. it's alot easier to buy the gear and stand around looking like ya can race.it's worked for me. squats benches and milk? my god man, it's 2002 already ;)
