I just bought my son a 99 YZ80. It is in good shape, but we don't have the owners manual. So.....

1) How much oil does the tranny hold, is there a way to check it or do you just put in the right amount when you change it.

2) What is the stock gearing? Can you recomend a front and rear setup for a new to 2smokes 9 year old who is not always in the powerband yet.

3) I am running 32-1 Yamalube, with a ngk8 plug, one step hotter than stock, due to his slower riding style. Does this sound about right. I don't know about the status of the jetting, I have not pulled the carb yet, but it runs out clean and the plug looks ok.

4) Will reeds help the bottom end power, what type?

Any help will be appreciated!!!!!!!!!

Thanks

BTW, I also am desperate to find an owners manual or even better a service manual fot the YZ. I was sure that Clymers would have one but, not it seems for that year.

Thanks!!!!!!

Rocky we had a 2000 YZ80 but I am sure they are almost identical. We put in the CarbonTech LT reeds to pull a bit more bottom out of it. They really made a major difference (later we also had Eric Gorr retime the ports which really made it a bottom end puller without sacrificing any topend.
We always ran the br8 plugs even with racing. Keep using the Yamaha 2R at 32:1 that worked great for us.
We left the stock gearing on with the other moda we did.
I think the clutch oil was 500CC (I thought it was on the engine near the fill?) and we had best luck with Honda oil. Send WaltCmoto a PM as he bought it from us and still has it as well as the manual.

Dont know about the reeds, but we always ran 40-1 premix.Gearing will be 13 or 14-47,big or small wheels.500 cc´s of tranny oil,if I remember, its stamped on the case, and theres no level control. The only real problem weve had with several YZ 80 and 85´s,was the rear wheel bearings getting loose in the hub!

Thanks for all the help, my son and I have worked hard in the last few days and the bike is running and looking good.

I have a question though, how detailed is the owners manual? My new KTM has a very detailed one, the new littke Kawai we jus bought has a bare min. info one. Is there any profit in tying to find a manual, or is it worth the trouble as nobody seems to have one localy?

Thanks again for the kind help.

my daughters 96 yz 80 holds 500 cc of oil I use 50wt also I put a set of power reeds in it from boysen what a diffrence, eric gore recomends a 12-52 on the gearing I havent changed that yet but it's orderd. the yz's have a great amount of top end compared to the rm's and cr's the reeds and gearing will help the bottom end somewhat. here is a link to all the parts and part numbers for a 99 yz 80 http://216.37.204.205/Yamaha_OEM/YamahaDB.asp?Type=12&A=161 . I hope this helps.
