...but I'm new to the world of 2-strokes. The service manual says to use SAE 10w-40 for the tranny oil. Does that mean I can use any automotive motor oil rated at SAE 10W-40?

Thanks!

You can use any 10-40 that doesn't have friction modifiers added. It doesn't have to be a motorcycle specific oil. Check the label for the words enegry conserving, if it's not there then your good to go. For the record alot of folks myself included use ATF Type F as another option.

Thanks! I'll be off in search of Non-Energy saving SAE 10W40 or ATF Type F from my local Kragens now.
