How do i know if my water pump is working...

I'm not sure if my water pump is working right. the bike seems to run pretty hot :scream: How do i test the pump to see if its working correctly?
my bikes a CR500

Open the cap (with the engine cold :eek: ) and start the engine. The water should be circulating, especially when you rev it up.

not good :scream: i tried that and its not movin. i just read the other post about the 96 CR500 and someone said the 89s have plastic gears. maybe mine are shot. fun in the garage tomorrow!

Just looking in the radiator isnt good enough, as i have seen plastic impellers that would move the water but at high rpms obviously slipped on the shaft as the bike would run hot. If it runs hot you should inspect the parts, as its alot cheaper than rebuilding an engine.

You can just drain the coolant and take off the water pump cover kick the bike over a few times and see if the water pump should rotate clockwise when kicking it over. I beleive (could be wrong) Honda used a plastic gear for the water pump cause I beleive seeing a plastic gear for my '92 CR in my owners manual.
