Hi guys!

I apologize for the space I'll take. I'm very happy that I found a
website that may help me with my old beast. So here I go.

I just brought back to life my old dirt machine. It's a Sachs250wr
1978. I got this machine when I was out in western Canada in the
province of Alberta around 1978-79. My oldest son talked me into
firing back the bike, so I did. But this is too much of a bike for
him, so I got him a Trial TY 250 so he can learn the base. And I got
caught in the act. I'm rediscovering the pleasure of blasting the
berms riding the logs the mud holes etc... with my son, which is
nice.

But now I need to find a source of spare parts for it. But it seems
difficult to find infos. I found the Herc web site and in the photo
gallery I discovered the Willie Bauer bike, this MC 250 looks like
my machine, except that mine is equipped with the Preston Petty
enduro lit kit, the 6 speeds gearbox, I even still have the leather
rear fender bag. Mr Leo Keller referred me to Mr Helmut Clasen who
was the same person that prepared this machine a little while back.
I just learn about him recently, he seems to be quite a legend.

Here are some infos about the bike:

Engine number 8814502 245cc typ Sachs 2501 / 6 A
Frame number 471000293

I'm all mixt up about this bike. I want to get back to dirt riding
like I used to, but I'm wondering about the reliability of the bike
and the spare parts availability. If the parts are available I'll
run it regularly. I live near Montreal Quebec Canada, it might be
difficult to get the needed parts, we'll see.

The bike runs fine, cold compression is 155 psi. I installed new
fork seals after dismantling the forks for clean up. It was a good
thing. I tore apart, cleaned and regreased all the bearings I could
find. I cleaned the carb from the accumulated sludge. Especially
after the first ride I did last winter when the original foam air
filter disappeared in the intake... I had to make up a foam air
filter ,but I'd really need the appropriate filter. I changed the
rear shocks, my oldest son broke one of the original blue Koni during
a fall, so I installed a set of Agon that works beautifully. The last
thing I did was to replaced the rear tire because my old metz was
showing its age (24 years).

Right now the only problem is a grabby clutch. When the engine is
cold it takes a small twist of the throttle to prevent the engine
from stalling when pulling the clutch, once the engine is warm ti's
OK, but still a bit grabby. But it never slips. I don't want to open
it right now since it run OK, because I don't know how long I will
have to wait before getting the new parts. May be someone can refer
me to some after market outlet.

That's it for now and thank you for taking the time

Regards
Sylvain

Hi Sylvain, In the back of a Dirt Bike magazine I found a place called LETKO COMPETITION CYCLES, 86th & Parallel Pkwy., Kansas City, KS 66112 (913) 334-2410. Order Line (913) 334-2410. They claim to sell Hard-To-Find-Parts for Euro-bikes, Penton, Husky, SACHS, KTM, etc. No web site mentioned. Hope this helps.

Sylvain,
As Tracy suggested call Letko. They know their stuff and do 2 stroke motor and crank work on the premisis.

Also, you might want to try the Penton Owners Group (www.pentonusa.org) as many of the Pentons had Sachs motors before they went with KTM's.

Many of those Penton guys still race their bikes. This last Sunday in the Missouri Vintage MX series we had a 250 Penton with a Sachs motor on the track!
