What’s up guys and gals,

About a year ago, I purchased my first bike ever, a 1997 Honda CR250.

I had my cousin and best friend teach me how to ride. I really enjoy trails not crazy about hill climbs.

I live in California and ride Carnegie, Metcalf, Hollister and Pismo.

I would like to sell my bike and jump onto a Green Sticker Honda 4-stroke, probably a 2002.

I’m 6’0 and about 250 pounds.

Which model should I be looking at?

the CRF230 is going to be WAY slower and WAY smaller then your CR250.

Maybe look at a CRF250X? Or 450X if you want power comparable or more then your CR250 (also I'm not quite sure when they started makign the CRF250X, 2004?) not sure about the green sticker because I don't have to worry about it here. but even the 250Xis going to be underpowered compared to your CR250. But it does have the potential to be ridden quite fast.

But unless you feel your CR250 is 10 times the power you will ever think about needing, I would suggest something a little bigger based on your experience. Especially since you somewhat on the larger size (no offense, but the 230 wasn't made to handle that much)

I just like to ride the trails not very fast.. just to have a good time...

I don't use my cr250's power at all... I don't like the power band feeling... If I do a small hill climb, I just want to slowly get up the hill... I'm in not hurry...lol

My friends have cr250's and fly up the hills in 2nd gear... Me, I'll lug up the hill in 3rd gear because i fear the power band...

CRF230 is not a good option.. They're heavy and slow..

You will most likely get used to the power of the bike, and as soon as you do, you'll be unhappy with something like a CRF230.

I'd suggest that you ride a couple 4 strokes first. I wouldn't suggest a CRF250R or X, for the same reason. You'll eventually run out of power on it.

A 450 is quite a bit of power, no doubt, but it's way different than what you have now. To really take advantage of the power on your 250, you have to be on it.. The 450 has a much wider powerband, and can stand being lugged a lot more than your bike.

Almost everyone I talked to said I wouldn't like the 450, cause it was so powerful. But, you don't have to be in the power all the time to be able to ride the bike. You have a lot of "reserve" power, in my opinion.

When I said I don't know about the green/red stickers, I mean I don't know which bikes fall into green or red. We don't have that nonsense here.

Coming off a CR250 and weighs 256. Either the 450X or XR650, and get the springs stiffer. Depending on how fast you ride, a spring change that much will need revalving to work correctly. Both them bikes come set for a rider around 170-180 tops.

I would suggest an xr 400/600/650 or similar larger bore trail bike. From your statement I get the feeling you just want to plonk around on something comfortable.

How about a Yamaha WR400/426/450? Plenty of power with a mellow delivery. Most that I ride with have them... they sure seem to me that they have proven to have a good, dependable, well thought out, long lasting motor.

find an XR400. Then, if you want to move to a more race-paced bike, you'll probably be able to unload that XR for about what you gave for it.

The bigger the engine, the heavier the bike. A 400 isn't that heavy.

Depends on who owns the xr400....mine is very heavy and when I get tired it is a pain to lift up if tipped over and to kick start, not to mention when it fell on me in a down hill roll over...but would not want any other bike! It is the most fun you can have out in the dirt riding as far as I can say! :nod:

So whats the diff between getting an XR compared to and motocross type bike like my cr250....

The XR is a solid trail bike. The 97 CAR250 was the most ridgid MX race bike made. The XR will run damn near for ever, with regular basic maintenance. The CR needs to be rebuilt a lot more often. The CR is lighter. The XR is not a big jumper, no 100 foot jumps recommended. Year and bore equal, the XR is cheaper. You do NOT have to add oil to the XR gas. You can do a lot more mods to the XR, if need be. Not a lot you can do to the CR. The XR has lights, and can easily be made street legal.

It has the same maintenance schedules as the CRF model. What year? How many hours are on the engine? What kind of work has been, or not been done to it?

At your weight a wide ratio 250f is probly not the best choice.

that xr400 sure sounds like a good idea to me. Although I haven't ridden one, I'm guessing that they make a great trail bike (almost as good as a KDX....Ha!). With a few light mods, the XR might be the ticket for you. It will not have nearly the thrust of your CR, however. But I think you said you were looking for a dirt cruiser.
