I just bought a '02 (?) YZ250 for $3300.  The bike is in great shape and has a lot of aftermarket goodies.  One of the goodies is a powder coated frame.  During the powder coating process the VIN number got covered over (stamped?) or the plate removed.  The VIN on the title has a "2" in the 10th digit which should designate it as an '02, but I can't physically reconcile that to the bike.  Is there any other way to confirm this as an '02?  Engine serial number?  Some easy to identify unique '02 feature?

Thanks for the help, I just want to put my mind at ease!

Simple, they changed the air filter in 02'
The one on the left is 02-03, the right is 2001 or earlier. If you got an 03 for $3300. even better.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I feel good that its narrowed down to a '02 or '03, of course I was concerned about it being older.  I figured it was an '02 because of the smaller brake reservoir, I thought it changed for '02 but wasn't sure.

Here are the goodies:

RAD Valve, Race Tech suspension, Doma pipe, FMF Shorty, Renthal Twin Wall bars, Applied triple clamp, Hinson basket, new Michelin rubber and new sprockets and chain.

Sound like a deal?

Gonna make a woods bike out of it, on order:

That will get me going for my first ride, next on the list:

Steahly 10 oz. flywheel?

Stiffer springs

Personally, I like to buy high and sell low. I paid 2900.00 for a twice used 97 last year.....

It is odd how bikes loose value like crazy in the first few years then bottom out..

10th digit in the Vin should be an "X" for a 99.
drzgod, it's odd that they powdercoated such a new bike, but I guess it happens. If you want, you can pm me the Vin and engine number and I'll make sure they match for you.;)
