Forget what the service manual tells you, it is absolutely USELESS on this topic. Go to the FAQ section of this forum and scroll down until you see a link for Matt's description of fork spring replacement on "www.dishers.com". THAT is helpful information!
While I don't have the manual in front of me, my recollection of its fork spring CHANGE procedure is:
1) remove the fork caps.
2) replace the springs.
3) replace the fork caps.
...with no mention of the required disassembly procedure.
Now, perhaps everyone else in the world realizes you have to disassemble them to remove the springs. Considering that this was the first time I had ever touched the fork cap, however, I didn't fall into that category.
Maybe if I had looked at the previous page under the "fork DISASSEMBLY" section, I could have gleaned some useful info.
Oh well, I can go ahead and change the fork oil while I have them apart...silver lining!
