I was planning on going out to do a nice single-track ride with some friends tomorrow. When I went to start prepping my bike I noticed gas leaking from the right rear corner of the IMS tank where the radiator protector bolts onto the tank. I removed the radiator protector and took a couple of pictures of the leak and leak/crack area then drained the gas. The picture with the blue arrows to illustrate the crack has been lightened to better show the crack area. The lightening makes it look more like a white tank than the 'natural' color of the tank as shown in the other two pictures.
Has anyone ever had their 1995 and newer IMS hi-capacity tank develop a crack and leak? This tank was about 3 years old, give or take 6 months and shows no signs of abuse(scratching/gouging/etc., etc.) . I am almost certain that this tank holds 3.9-4.0 gallons of gas but the only size I see currrently available at the IMS website is a 3.4 gallon tank. Can anyone confirm that IMS used to make a 4.0 gallon tank and when they stopped making it??
I'm wondering how IMS is to deal with in regards to issues like this with their product?? I'm thinking that a 3 year life expectancy is NOT a product I'd be proud of........and it's certainly NOT acceptable from a consumer standpoint to have to replace a tank every 3 years. I stopped by and chatted with a friend that has owned a 1991 CR500 since it was new and ask him about the tank on his bike. He said that it's the original one and was amazed that after 3 years a IMS tank would 'go away'/crack.
I'd certainly like to hear from the 'JustKDX' army regarding any IMS tank knowledge! Thanks in advance for any info you can share regarding this 'cracked-up' issue I've encountered! :-)
