Information on greasing a new KDX

I recently purchased a 2002 KDX200. I've followed the engine break-in procedure and now have 100 miles on it. My question is centered on greasing the bike. I read on JUSTKDX.com, that I should grease the suspension linkage on a brand new bike. After further researching, I found Jeff Fredette's interview on the same website and he recommended greasing the steering head, swing arm and linkage bearings. I have the service manual, but need help on what I'm really supposed to grease. I'm new to dirtbikes, but very mechanically inclined. I need a crash course on part names and locations. Also, what grease should I use? Thanks for your help.

You should check and grease all the stuff you posted and add the kick start lever and wheel bearings to your list and anything else that pivots. Or buy all new bearings cause you'll need em soon enough. BTW use a waterproof grease like Bell Ray.

Ryan, good u have a manual....priceless imo.ok u want to grease the swing arm, rocker arm,tie rod also called pull rods or dog bones, lower shock mount, wheel bearings.the steering stem bearings too.keep lubed....any other pivot pts...r break pedal, kick stand levers/perch etc.also good to spray and keep clean ur kicker and shifter shaft where they meet the seal.it keeps crud from working in the seal and causing a leak.sorry i'm a service freak. oh cables from time to time :)

Hello Ryan:

Personally, I cannot say enough good things about Jeff Fredette's videotape he sells. On his tape, he goes through all the setup and maintenance procedures for the KDX and he actually walks you through the steps. This isn't a typical home improvement show style tape where they say act like its totally easier than it is and then just show the completed product. You get to see the whole process. It can be a little boring but you will learn a ton of practical information.

He shows you in great detail exactly what to grease and shows you the proper way to do it to maximize the lubrication.

Seriously, pick it up...its worth it. You can find it on FRPOffroad.com Website (Click Here and go to the bottom of the page) It costs 50.00 but you get about 4 hours of good info.

I was glad to have it for my KDX.

Regards,

Christopher

I greased all my rear suspension bearings (there are a lot of em) except for the top shock bearing and headset. Both those bearings went teats up.. the rest are ok. after just a year.

Good enough? If not, ask specifically. Being mechanically inclined, just take stuff apart, grease it.

One of the terms not listed is 'unitrack'. That's the piece on the bottom of the shock that mounts to the shock/frame/swingarm/pull rods.

Grease? The best you can find. The belray waterproof (marine application) has been reported to work well. Something that does NOT work...your basic moly general-purpose chassis grease.

If it's a sticky mess of a grease..something you can't get off your hands..THAT'S what you want to use.

I use hydrotex parasyn70 btw. It's great! ONLY with that grease have I gotten ANY sort of life out of the bottom shock mount bearing. And that's with taking it all apart 2-3 times a year.

Congrats on your kdx! Sounds like it's got a GOOD home!

...re: maintenance. You using notoil on your air filter? Can't beat it for quick cleanup. Cleans up in a couple minutes, max. Clean it every couple rides at least. Change your tranny oil the same.

It runs adjacent to the transverser, on the hydropoil rod connected to the flux capacitor ;)
