Protecting Roadless Areas in Washington’s National Forests:
Governor Gregoire Seeks Public Input
Washington contains nearly two million acres of roadless areas in its nine million acres of national forest land. These roadless areas were protected under a rule adopted in 2001, after receiving broad public support from Washingtonians. In 2005, the Bush Administration repealed the 2001 Rule and replaced it with an optional Governor’s petition and rule-making process.

Governor Gregoire wants to ensure that the character of these roadless areas is protected, and is therefore petitioning the U.S. Department of Agriculture in November 2006. Before submitting this petition regarding the management of Washington’s roadless areas, the Governor is asking Washingtonians to weigh in on the issue. Please note that all comments must be received by October 13, 2006.

There are three ways for the public to submit comments on how roadless areas should be protected:

Attend one of the two informal, informational workshops outlined below and submit the comment form in person at the workshop.
Governor Gregoire’s staff, the Department of Ecology, the Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Department of Community Trade and Economic Development are hosting these informal, informational workshops. Attendees will have the opportunity to review maps of Washington’s roadless areas, the management requirements of these areas under the 2001 Roadless Rule, and the characteristics of forested areas and discuss these topics with staff. Comment forms will be provided and collected at the workshops. No formal testimony will be taken.
