jetting suggestions for 220

hi, we have a stock 01 220, and it oil fouls plugs on start ups, and slow/medium riding conditions. I'm thinking it just needs a smaller pilot or lower the clip a notch to lean it out.. we are using 40/1 premix ratio, and we are 800 ft above sea level..... what jetting changes have you guys made?

Raise the clip to lean it out, which drops the needle. Try a 155 main and a 45 pilot maybe. Stock is a 160, and 48 I belive.

Stock Jets for the 2001 KDX 220 are 45 pilot and 145 Main. I am currently running 45 pilot and a 142 main. I have done no mods to my engine. Elevation is about 800 feet, temp is around 80. I am also using a BR8ES plug. Many people on this site recommend going to a BR7ES. I have yet to foul a plug. The bike runs great. After the initial start for the day it takes about a block to clean out then runs beautiful. I am considering trying a 42 pilot and switching to the hotter plug. Good Luck!

I also use a 45P, 155M, needle on the second clip from the top.air screw 1/2 turn out.FMF Gnarly torque pipe with a Pro Circuit Sparky.Also have the porting and head machined by Fredette.Just installed the Boyesen Rad valve two days ago.Stock gearing and the snorkel removed.This bike runs sooooo...... sweet.I have had it now about three weeks and it's the best running KDX I have owned (my third).The jetting and clip setting will work even with the stock exhaust system.Enjoy your bike I love mine.

This may sound ridiculously simple but stock oil ratio is suggested 32:1. I also have a '01 220 and I rode all winter and decreased my oil ratio to 40:1 thereby richening the whole thing for the winter. I ran a 152 main also if I recall correctly. I went with the 145 main at the end of winter but when the weather really warmed up I started fouling plugs on startup. I'd start it, warm it for 10-15 secs start riding and foul within 100yds. 3 plugs in 2 days and that was a totally new experience to me. I mixed up a J-can of 32:1 and voila, problem solved. There are those who run 40:1 but you have to jet accordingly. Where to start..no idea. I posted here a few days ago looking for a starting point and got zilch for an answer. Better luck to you.

This worked for me on my 99 220, 45 pilot,42 if it is hot out, raise the clip one position to #2 and run a 145 main, air screw at about 1-1/2 out golden spectro a 50:1 br7es plug. :)

This is always a hot topic because no two bikes are the same, and the only way to get yours right is to do a plug chop and adjust as needed.
Just look at the range of jets that are being listed and you can see that my bike is at the far end of the list at 42pilot, and 140 main needle in the third clip air screw 1 1/2 turs out.

I ride in central Arkansas, and rejet with the weather changes, my '01 220 has twinair filter, 607 reeds, br7es plug, fmf rev pipe, turbine core two muffler, 13-51 gears, and runs Belray si7 oil at 40:1. I wiegh 152 in my ridding gear, and yes rider wieght changes the load on the bike, and needs to be considered.

Check out canadian dave's just kdx main page, read about jetting follow the links, then with all that knolage in hand you can find the right jets for you bike. i run 40 pilot, one slot up on clip, 150 main and its perfect, just to show their is a big range and you must work with it.

thanks guys... i was looking at our manual that came with the bike, but for some reason, it doesnt tell what the stock jets are... are you guy sure its a 45 and 145 that is stock? also, where do you buy leaner needles?

My 220 came with 42 pilot and 145 main as stock jetting.My engine is stock,and the only mods I have done are,removed the air box lid,added Boyesen reeds,Uni air filter.Currently my jetting is 40 pilot,142 main,and I moved the clip up one position on the needle,and a BR7ES plug.As everyone says,jetting is different for each bike and rider.Start with what CD recommends and go from there.

bigfoot,, do you like your boysen reeds? did it give you any top end rev with that mod alone?

Regarding the Boyesen reeds #607. I don't think that you will get noticable increase in revs on a 220 with them. What I did notice is that the bike responded quicker to throttle "feedback" while riding and when lugging the bike a bit in some messy conditions ti is easier to control the rear wheel spin and negotiate technical trail conditions. The bike is more responsive to throttle settings. (Throttle response) I think the Boyesen reeds are "quicker" than stock but once wide open they are the same as stock.

99 fredette 220 152/38, needle CEL center clip, A/S 3/4 out 36mm carb, 40/1 yamalube 2r, 7BRES, really slow rider! set to run at a temp of 90 deg. this bike rocks!

I agree 100% with FredT about the throttle response.You will not gain a lot,if any top end,but I think I gained a whole lot of controllable bottom.It was such an improvement,that I put the 12 tooth countershaft sprocket back on.Liked the whole setup better!!!
