I need to replace my 1990 E2's fork springs and I'd like to go with .32 or .33 kg springs, but the heavy option for the E2 is .31kg. Does the 88 model .33 kg fit right in or does it require special spacers?
If you want to do it right, everything requires special spacers.
You can get 'Take off' .35 springs from Fredette cheap. Likely many here with '95-up bikes may be willing to part with their paperweights.
I'm confused. Are you saying that you can't find springs heavier than .31kg? You must be referring to OEM springs. I think the stock springs on the E model KDX's is .31kg. These springs will work well if you are only 140 pounds or so.
I have an E3 and have .42kg's. You can get almost any weight spring you want. The spacers will be a function of the length of the spring and the amount of preload required to obtain the proper static and race sag.
