KDX200 bored out to a 220 or just get a 250

I am sure there must be other threads like this, but here is another one as I am sure there are people out there with the same feelings as I have on this subject.

I currently ride a modified KDX200, I have done all the bolt on mods possible, other than the RB Carb or Federate Carb Mod, I live in South Africa, so I haven’t considered these mods. I am quite a big guy at 210lbs at 5'10", so I am always looking for more power. I rode my brothers GasGas 300ec on Saturday, it has good power but I didn't like the suspension at all, I have dialed my KDX suspension in so much and it suits the way I ride 100%. When I climb onto other bikes they just feel weird.

I wish I could put a 250 engine into my KDX200 setup, sound odd considering that many people take the KDX200 engine and put it into other frames. I enjoy the plushness of the KDX ride I just wish it had more power and torque for those really big rutted hill climbs, where you may need to tap off and then roll the power back on, the lost of momentum when I tap off just kills me.

Will boring it out to a 220 make much of a difference? Will I be satisfied or should I not waste my money and just get a 250?

Hi SA Dude
I cant answer your question on the difference in power between what you have done to your 200 and what a 250 will do . The 250 should have a lot more torque . One thing you need to consider is that KDX 250's are grey imports and you cant get spares here in SA . Are you running standard sprokets ? Rather look at a smaller front sprocket first and a larger rear sproket later . May give you the power you want with less expense of new bike .

Hi KDX Crazy

I am currently running a full FMF pipe and silence, Boyesen Reeds, Modified Air box, re-jetted carb and I have gone down one tooth on my front sprocket. When I mentioned 250 I was talking about YZ250, KX250, etc.

I was riding out in the Peacevale area (near Durban) on Saturday and most of the hills were hell easy, but there was this one hill that I tried a couple of times and I didn't get up, it was a hill that was very rutted and then about 3/4 of the way up there was this big step that would throw the bike and you had to tap off or you would flip. The problem was once I tapped off I couldn't get the momentum back again. There was another group of about 7 riders that were there and only two guys got up, one guy on a WR450F and the other looked like he was on a CR250.

I love hill climbs it is the thing I enjoy most about riding and generally the harder the better, so I was a bit annoyed when I didn’t get up, it just felt like if I had that extra bit of power I may have been able to get up there.

What I really want to know, is if it is worth boring the KDX200 out to a 220 or 225, is the power enough of an increase to warrant me not getting a 250?

Thanks for the response, cheers.

Hi Paul
Sorry I thought you where talking about a KDX 250 .
With what you have got you should hold a 4 stroke 250 , and according to one of my mates at a dealer he says the 220 conversion will put you with or even ahead of the 250 2 strokes . Bear in mind that you cant just rebore and stick in a 220 piston , the head will need to be machined the power valve worked on etc
You would be looking at in the region of R5000 to do the conversion .
Cheers

Thanks Shawn

R5000 sound like a lot of money to spend, I was thinking it would be more like R3800, I will have to think carefully about doing it, R5000 is a deposit on a new 250.

The other option is just pay the KDX off and look at buying a bigger bike then. I have another year left to pay my 2005 KDX off, if all goes well. Patients isn't one of my strong points, so I will have to see if I can hang on until then, if that is what I decide.

Which dealer did you talk to, about the 220 convertion? Where is it based?

Cheers
Paul

The dealer is Kawasaki Boksburg , they specialise in offroad bikes .
I would also recommend you ride a 250 to see if it is what you want .
You may sell your bike and not be happy with the new one .
My KDX is dead standard without even a aftermarket pipe , and I rode with some KX 250's yesterday , they could not get away from me and when we got up to high speeds they chickened out , and I left them .
Also remember MX bike motors produce more power as they are designed to be raced and rebuilds are required more often . Your KDX will give you many more happy miles without problems .
Cheers

Your suspension feel will likely change once you put more power on top of it, so be ready for that.

you have to remember you are then putting more stress on the crank and bearings when you over bore. Also the over bored bikes tend to run a bit hotter as the cooling capacity requirements change with the added displacement.

I would recommend a good porting job and maybe some material off the head to bump the compression of the 200CC's first and play with timing and pipes. do you have the flywheel weighted? i run 10oz on mine with ten thousands off the head and jug and a wiseco piston, rad valve and rev pipe. my timing is retarded several degrees too. it will hang with my buddy who has a big bore kit in his KDX and not overheat in mud races like he does. i also run a KX80 radiator cap.
