Kinda looks like the ole boys at KTM Talk are plannin something similar, even to the same place. They have a cooler name for their get together though, the Katoombayah Subcultuer Pilgrimage. This has me thinking, we need a name for this event if we are to have it.

Where are we on this endeavor anyhow?

Yea, I saw their thread, but doubt it will happen in the Kiamichi. Whatever, no matter to me. We are gonna get this epic ride in gear.

Ok, here is what was posted on another site by a friend of mine that ries there all the time. Looks like I will have a good number of riders from my group! Already have 5 "be theres" and a couple of "maybes".
****************************************************************
Here is were I camp when I am there
http://www.touroklahoma.com/Pages/stateparks/parks/tmspbig.html
The great thing about riding this area is there is NO permits needed and you can ride directly out of the campground and start hitting trails. The trails are a mix of tight woods, logging roads, and 4 wheeler trails. Almost all of the trails are covered in rocks so a skid plate is your friend.

This is just outside of the town of Talihena if anyone rides street they will probably have heard of the area. It is a great place for harley guys and sportbikes alike.

There is also riding nearby around Clayton. However it tends to be ONLY logging roads and Jeep trials. This is where we originally began riding in SE OK when we rode there we camped at Honobia Camp grounds. When riding Clayton you must also have a permit that is $20 for out of state riders.

If we get this thing together I can talk to a guy that knows every turn, rock and big foot hiding spot in the area. For a few bucks we could possibly set up a couple of group rides with guides. Just a thought.

Great input, Keetoman! This sounds like a great place to start from because of the amenities at the state park.

Re your comment about not needing permits. Does this mean we are outside of the WMA?

I saw a thread about some guys riding something like 40 miles to a town, gassing up and getting lunch and then coming back by a different set of trails. Now that sounds like fun!

If Garmin comes through by then I will have a new 60CS GPS unit to help us if we get too deep in the woods.

Re $$ for group ride. Works for me, but I may be too old and slow to keep up.

tony, I'm not sure what the details are but the guy that posted that goes riding there with his friends a few times a year.

As for the guided tour, that is strictly optional so we can take as much time or goof off whenever we like.

I will have my Garmin GPS V on my bike also. It got me through Colorado last year and I am sure you will enjoy yours! One thing... n laughing at my makeshift GPS mount! It's just a Protaper bar pad turned upside down and glued to the first pad. Then I take a large zipty around it all to hold it in place and it worked like a champ in CO.

Define "Spring"? March or April will proabaly be very bad for me, but I would like to try to go. That is why I have been hesitant to post up. If spring means May then it might be good. I might be doing a few of the races in March + helping with our own race will be time consuming.

It will be a long drive for me, but should not be to bad.

Dan: Nothing is firmed up as yet. I kinda was figuring on late March to the end of April timeframe, but I have a project in Abilene that has a drop dead date of March 31, so it will likely shift back until April for sure and could slide into the first week or so of May. Weather then is always a factor. I have seen it snow in April here in Dallas and that is a couple of hundred miles north.

I'm going to add you as a maybe. You can pick up Camo Dan and Ken on the way through. :thumb:

Our Race is at the beginning of April so I will need until late April to catch up on the things I will putting off to ride every weekend in Feb and march :p Late April or early May sounds about right. The temps in early May are still bearable too.

I'm in for a ride up there . Its in my neck of the woods . But I've never rode there . Heard it is great . Make sure you buy a permit slip to be up there . The park rangers will write you up big time for not having one . I fish up there all the time . Even with fishing licenses you still have to have a permit .
You can get one Walmarts .

After 1200 miles of running around Texas this week alone, it appears that I will be in Abilene for at least three days of next week. I will call and find out what I can and post the answers here. Although the idea of a guide sounds nice, a warm shower sounds nice as well. The ranch Jim refers to is primitive based upon my conversations with the owner. Not even running water. That leaves me thinking one of the state parks is the way to go.

Would a trip like work for everybody in April? The project in Abilene HAS to wrap up on or before the 31st of March and I expect to be spending every moment there during March. I hate to beg, but April is a bit more predictable weather wise as well.

The first weekend in April is our last race on our current land and should be the best one yet! So anything other than the weekend of the 4th will work for me. The third or fourth would be better as I would have to ask for a kitchen pass for 2 weekends in a row! :)

With the SX on the 17th, that makes the 24th / 25th the best weekend. The weather should be cooperating by then and it will be before all the bugs come out.

Why don't we all look at our calendars and see how that weekend works.

I will have to check on that Tony. We are supposed to have a Garrett Berg memorial race planning meeting sometime in April. I'll let you know when I find out.

just an idea........if we plan it the weekend right after the sx, then we are putting pressure on those who traveled to the sx and got time off the weekend before. i know those who come down from the north are exhausted after that weekend and might not have the spousal enthusiasm that is required to make two all weekend rides in a row. maybe the first weekend in may would be better for all. i know that there is never a perfect date.

Guys: I gotta say that you are correct and I kinda figured it out after I posted. I am cool with a May ride on any weekend as all are open as of now. May may be better also becasue the weather is getting more predictable by then. At least we wouldn't have to worry about snow! I guess I could set up a poll, but that would be work and it is Saturday and I have already cracked a beer.

Well, after reading all this, I'm interested. Seems like most if not all my Heartland MacKenzie ride brothren are gonna be there. Just need to decide a date. Sounds like May is gonna be the target date. I bet Danman and I could truckpool. Sounds like the state CG may be the most comfortable way to go. But you guys that have been there know best.

Nope. We need to look at dates for both MacKinzie and Kiamichi.

The SX is on April 17th and with the things that have happened in Abilene with work it looks like I need to push to May and on :whiner: for a big weekend ride.

I had forgot about the annual gathering at Justin's, so we need to work around that as well.

I'm in pretty good shape for anytime from early May on. Everybody look at their calendars and post up dates that DON'T work because of prior commitments, races, etc.
