I have a KLX 300 and I consider it to be just about the best bike I have ever owned. Great handling, reliable, easy to start, six-speed transmission, and with a few mods (bigger head pipe, muffler plug removed, and crankcase breather mod) it has good power.
I had one. I thought it was a real friendly fun bike. Plenty of power too. Great low end power. A little weak on top end typical of a 4 stroke. The only thing that drove me nuts was the massive engine braking. Coming from a 2 stroke with hardly any engine braking at all, I just couldn't get used to it. But I never felt the bike was heavy. I believe they only weigh about 230 lbs. It's basically a KDX with a 4 stroke engine. Handling and comfort is great on a KLX 300. They're inexpensive and reliable too, just like the KDX!!!
I've got an '02 KLX 300 that I've owned for about 2.5 years. First bike so I don't have much to compare to, however, I just ordered the Mikuni TM 33 carb Kit and White Bros E-series Head Pipe. The stock carb is a tad on the weak side and the head pipe I believe is off of the KLX 250 (I don't think they manufactured a larger head pipe for the 300 cc engine).
I've read that these two performance mods make a huge difference in throttle response.
The bike seems to be user friendly for us shorter riders (lower seat height). Excellent for the tight trails.
If you are heavier than 160 lbs or so, the forks may be a bit weak.
I just fitted a kx frontend on mine off a 92 kx125 ....and wow is it a great bike...inspires confidence....I really would reccommend one to anybody as a woods bike!!
I rode a 98' KLX300 for a few years and it was a great bike after all the modding. For it to be competitive you must get a 33 or 35mm pumper carb, header pipe/muffler, breather kit, and 2 tooth larger rear sprocket. Then it will run with the big dogs. The suspension and low ground clearance are it's biggest drawbacks...unless you are short and light.
The little KLX was the best turning bike I have ever owned but that was probably due to it's low slung stance. It also comes with a very cheesey, single bolt stlye bottom fork clamp. I replaced mine with a billet unit and the handling improved even more.
When it was all said and done, I had about 6K $$$s into the bike with all the mods. Try to find a nice used one with all the mods already done as the motors are nuke-proof.
Good luck.
About your KX 125 forks...How hard was it to match up to the KLX? My oil seals are going out again on my stock forks. Good excuse to just flat out replace them for a better set up. Any idea what year KX 125 matches up the best?
Any year up to 95 and the kx clamps...I use 92...the blue ones...the old owner polished them, rebuilt them and revalved them. U will need either a kx wheel and disc or the klx wheel and a wheel spacer made up. Easy enough mod...pretty much a straight swap. The bike feels so much better now. You will go faster and feel safer in the rough stuff.
I am going to look at a '97 KLX 300 tomorrow. The guy is asking $2150, but that seems a bit high. What should I offer him, it is bone stock. Is that an OK year. I have a budget of $2200 max. I have also checked out a KDX 220 that is a 01 and it is really done up, but I am a bit afraid of having a 2 stroke to motor around on. I will probably mix my riding between open hilly trails and tight woods riding.
