Knee protection?

Someone told me they sustained a horrid wound to their thigh and hip from a knee guard that was being worn inside riding pants. It came lose during a fall and was trapped inside the pant leg. Imagine if it had taken the inner trouser leg route and ended up in the family jewels! Inside or outside, which is best with knee protection?
Unless you’re prepared to gaff tape the things to your legs I’m assuming outside is preferable but I don’t wear them all the time so am not sure yet?
Thanks to everyone for sharing their dirt.

I wear the Thor Force inside the pants and it has straps above and below the knew to hold it in place. It has never come loose but I have had the ones that strap just below the knee loosen up. I doubt it could travel all the way up the leg because it would have to get past your knee but ya never know!! I never ride without knee guards. The knees are so exposed and susceptible to damage.

I like them on the inside so they don't catch on stuff. Also they look a bit dorky if you wear them on the outside...kind of like wearing your underwear over your pants, IMO :)

Knee Gaurds

I have some of the Thor Forces also. Good price to protection ratio and they shouldn't skewer anything.

Knees.

Thanks for you're views.
I find they catch on stuff when worn on the outside which is the last thing I need when I'm climbing all over the bike. Yeah, and they do have the tendency to make the wearer look like a bit of a dild* when worn on the outside. I have made a few padding mods to my knee guards coz they have a pivot system with a few nasty pieces in their construction and I don't want them coming loose during unplanned dirt inspections. They're just a cheapish pair of AXO's.
The accident I mentioned involved the bike coming down on the riders leg and sorta grabbing the guard through the pants and rubbing it up the leg. The elastic straps just acted like garrottes and there was a busted ankle involved as well.

Brad - you said your knee guards are AXO's and they have a pivot system. Are they the TMKPs? (Total Movement Knee Protectors). You said they have a few nasty pieces in their construction that could come loose. Could you explain that? I want to buy some hinged knee guards and am considering the AXO TMKPs (along with four other models - the Six Six One Ricochet, the Alpinestars Bionic, the new 2006 Thor Force, and the Fly Moto Knee Guard. Have you had a chance to try on any of the other models. If so, which of these do you think has the most padding in the knee?

I did some searching on this topic and didn't find the answer to my particular question. I recently had a get-off that resulted in a knee injury. Needless to say I'm looking into some braces/guards. First off I have big legs, about 18-19" calves(friends in school used to call me tree-trunk Tim). Secondly I also wear riding boots. I've seen alot of guys with raw legs and boots that don't fit/work with the braces/guards and the straps. My question is for the guys out there with legs like me, what works for you? I definitely want something, not to bulky, that will fit me and stay in place while offering decent protection and stability. Not looking to spends hundreds, just want some peace of mind.

i've never heard of anyone wearing knee guards outside their pants.

i have big calves too. if i wear knee/shin guards, i can't close the top of the boot. i now wear 661 knee cups.

I got my son and myself a pair of Fly hinged knee gaurds after he injured a knee. They're comfortable and seem to provide good protection on your "run of the mill" get-offs.
