The shifter shaft seal started leaking on me today. I tried running a feeler gauge through it to clean out any debris and it just made it worse. Has anyone had to replace this? Do I just dig out the old one and slide a new one in?

Those metal backed seals are a pain to dig out , but can be done. Then just get a socket the same size as the seal to tap it into place.

does that apply to older bikes like my 97? (ie removable without spliting cases) Just as i have my 97 up for sale it started leaking. I do happen to have a spare seal though!

Be sure to run the chain much looser on the new bike. People are wasting thier bearings, hub and seal.
