So does anybody have one? Played one? I really want one for Christmas, but I figured I'd ask around in here before I decide if I want it or not. So, what's the scoop, like compared to Playstation 2. Thanks guys (and gals).

I've played both. The PS 2 eats the X Box for lunch, plus it plays PS 1 games, and DVD movies. And Microsoft doesn't exactly have a histoy of developing stellar games.

I agree with Spanks here. Although I haven't played PS2 I have had
a go on the Xbox and I think it sucks. The games cost to much, you have to buy all
of these ports to make use of all it's functionsand so far the only really good game
is Halo. PS2 offers waaaay more

Well XBOX also plays DVDs and computer games. Games and system all cost the same....

The way I understand it, is that in order to play DVDs on the Xbox. You have to buy a seperate remote to unlock that feature:o :think

I'm no X-Box fanatic (I have a PS2), but Microsoft does have an excellent reputation in publishing games and gaming peripherals.

The Madness racing series, Age of Empires, Mech Commander, Mechwarrior 4, Links, Close Combat, and of course Flight Simulator, all considered to be rather competitive representatives of their respective genres.

Another Gaming Question:

I have a N64 that is several years old now. I have 7-8 games and don't play it too much. My question is, how does the new crop of gaming consoles compare to PC games? I don't play the games that much but, I am very intrigued by the PS2. Would the PS2 be any better than what I could do on the PC? I just bought a PC this past June and really haven't even entertained the idea of gaming on it until now. (BTW-800Mhz, ME OS, ATI All-In-Wonder 128 bit card, if that matters)
Keep in mind that I'm old, have very little computer or gaming experience and I am easily amused!

PS2 trounces Xbox IMO. PS2 has better games and much more of them and I like the fact that all the old classics for PS1 are being released in updated versions(GTA, Gran turismo, MX games, etc).
I have played game cube too, and I can say it is awesome, but I dont think it will have great racing games. Playstation has always killed the other manufacturers when it comes to good racing games IMO.

I got PS2 last year and went that route for I read somewhere that there wont be a PS3 until 2005...(because buying a new system every year gets old!!!)
...
I played some stupid game on X-Box yesterday at the Mall, I didnt like the controller at all....But I am very comfortable with the Playstations, its classic to me...
.
sonys reputation has always been the best over the years, and they always seem to have the largest amount of available games.
.....IMO, the nintendo systems are catered more to younger kids, dont get me wrong, they make good systems, I had a N64, and Nintendo gets certain game rights (namely, Zelda and starwars games in speciffic that I liked), but they know where they stand and they cater to the Pokemon and mario games , know what I mean?
.
I am sure the X-Box will be a nice console, BUT - IS IT GOING TO BE ANOTHER SEGA DREAMCAST?....
When the dreamcast came out, all the talk was about it.. look what happend to them.. sega suceeded in late 80's- early 90's with the genesis console. I was hooked. When the playstation came out, I thought it wouldnt have a chance, but it kicked the crap out of sega, so much so that they dropped out of making consoles and will now specialize in making games only.. and that is why Nintend shot at they younger market (I did read that somewhere)
. The xbox graphics will be the same caliber as PS2, so will the New nintendo Game cube...and Microsoft has a good reputation..
.
SO........... the question you have to ask yourself is , do you want to try a rookie, that will be comparable to PS2, but has limited game options for now and platform is unsure (for now)
or.. do you want to get the PS2, where you are guaranteed to be happy, with plenty of titles to chose from, and the DVD player works with game controller, ( I bought a seperate remote for $20, so I can kick back and make the changes)
.
oh yeah, the game consoles are close to computer graphics... If your computer is state of the art, (graphics and sound card - speed), it may better in the graphics, but i have found playing Motocross Madness 2 (which kicks butt) at my buddys, that sometimes the screen freezes briefly, which i think is from other applications running, where as a game console concentrates on 1 speciffic think.
.
another thought. I bought Tony Hawk Pro skater 3 (ps2) which rips! and when the modem comes out for ps2, you can play this game with up to 4 players on line!

I thought that I read that XBOX games that are out now aren't using the potential that they system has for graphics and such. Anybody else read that?

This Didn't Take Long!

PS2 it is, then. I just placed the order with the folks for Christmas. I was going to get a low-end DVD player (around $150), but asked to change to the PS2 and I would pay the diff. I did a lot of reading this morning and I agree with what you say about the XBox. It's a gamble, albeit a small one, since Satan, er, I mean, Bill Gates dominates whatever market he wants.:debil: I just don't want to take a $300 chance on what should be available in a year or so. I don't upgrade often, but when I do, I want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious in my decision. Thanks, guys.

Wow, I'm sure suprised that everyone here's goin with the PS2. If you look at the hardware, XBOX blows away everything else. Check it out:

http://xbox.ign.com/news/18801.html#specs

The hard drive and 4 controller ports is enough on it's own for me to get an XBOX over a PS2. I've played both, and I prefer the XBOX controller as well. Takes some getting used to, but works great. And the 5.1 sound is fantastic too! They're still just a littttle pricey up here for me. Halo ROCKS!

Dave-The review that I read also said that the Xbox has the potential but that the game designers were playing catch up trying to create new games. Plus, I feel like the PS2 is already well-established. Heck, I might eventually have to get them both! Who knows?

Look for PS2's on the net. My father got mine for 300 with 2 games, 2 controllers and the adapter for 4 controllers.

Guys, Guys, Guys,

Being an avid gamer(read: most of my life from atari to tope end computer gaming) I can assure you the PS2 does not "eat the xbox's lunch". I am an owner of PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube. So this is from first hand experience.

What we have to consider here is the fact that xbox and gamecube are new systems, they have only been out for a couple weeks. Comparatively the xbox and GC launch BLEW away Sony's PS2 launch (I know I was one of the ones who waited 7 hours in line for PS2 and the one and only stellar game at launch[SSX]). Certainly PS2 has more games it has been out for a year. But guess what, xbox is getting previously PS2 exclusive games, such as: Crash Bandicoot, and Metal Gear Solid. So to say xbox will not have as good a line up is just not true. In fact Xbox and GC look to have very competent line ups. Sure they don't nearly as many games as PS2, but you must remember they are new launches.

As far as hardware there really is no comparison. The xbox and GC are far superior. In fact PS2 is very difficult to program. the new systems are much more friendly in that department.

It is correct to say that XB and GC have not even been scratched as to their potential. PS2 will not get much better if any at all. And the graphics in games like Madden don't look nearly as good as they do on xbox.

(more to come after lunch)

You can have all of the computing power in the industry but if no developers take advantage of it, it's still Pong.

I'm back.

back to the topic at hand.

If you look at the line up of developers that are fully behind xbox you will see that they indeed have bright possibilities.

Xbox already has one of the best games EVER released on any system let alone a completely new system by a new company to the console market. This game I speak of is Halo. In fact this title very well may win game of the year.

Basically, if you want the best game line up right now and can't wait go with PS2. Plus word is PS2 will be dropping in price very soon.

I like all of the systems and would not say any are unworthy. As far as hardware GC and Xbox have much more potential.

That's an opinion, and as such it's GT3 in my book as far as consoles go. PC? Halflife series and it's endless clones.:D

Very true it is a matter of opinion. It just happens to be the opinion of many many respected gaming pubs, players and sites.

I agree about the HL thing but there is really much more to Halo than being a simple HL copy. You really have to play through the game to understand. BTW Half Life and CS are at the very tops of my list as far as FPS's as is Halo. Some games just seem to revolutionize a genre such as Doom, Quake, Goldeneye N64, HL and now Halo for FPS's

Halo ROCKS!

Having never played Half-Life, I can only say that Halo is by far the best game Ive ever seen on a console. Only got about 20 min's to play it, but it seems to be incredible. I also had some time with NFL 2002, and that was so realistic, I was loving every minute. I have tried to pick up an X-Box, but they are sold out every time I tried. You can find hundreds on eBay, but everyone is trying to make an extra 100 on them, and theyre already expensive as it is. May just have to wait, or just get lucky!

BTW, I host some Unreal Tournament games one night a week, so if any of you guys are interested, PM me and I'll send you the game IP.

PS2 Is In The House!

So, how cool are the folks? Called my mom from work this morning and by the time I got home, a brand new PS2 was in their possesion. Keep in mind, my folks are the type that do their Christmas shopping in, say, July! Plus, they picked it up at the PX on the base. For those not "in the know", there are no sales tax, federal or state, at the PX.:D
So I had to try it out. Since I don't have any games, I just plugged her into the wall and made the little drawer go open and close, open and close... Gosh, that was fun. I bet it'll be really cool when I get some games!
Cheers.

Yarbonwick:

Unfortunately it is a Xbox exclusive. M$ owns a big chunk of Bungie, so...... well you get the idea.

The game was originally scheduled as a PC game but M$ needed a blockbuster for their launch. I sure would like to play it on my 21" at 1600x1200, mmmmm fun.

Here are a couple of reviews if you are more interested in Halo:

http://xbox.ign.com/reviews/15922.html

http://gamespot.com/gamespot/filters/products/0,11114,472132,00.html

Electronic Gaming Monthly gave it a perfect 10. 1 of only 3 perfect scores ever. The other games being the likes of Mario and Zelda Ocarina of Time.

Check it out

It is not the only great game for the Xbox. SSX, Metal Gear, Madden, DOA3, and on.
