mid-top range

ive heard alot about mid range power top range power but nothing real clear...my question is, i ride in the mid to top range of the powerband in 1-3 gears but rarly ever get any higher(4-6) as i ride tight trails almost all of the time. i need to know if the mid-top range means 4-6 gears or the mid-top rpms of all gears, so i can choose an aftermarket pipe accordingly. please help me i dont want to waste 400 dollors on an exhaust system that wont do anything for where/the way i ride. thanks for any help you can lend me!
