About your question concerning shim dia vs. cartridge size. For reference sakes a late model YZ has a face shim of 27mm on the MV piston with a 32mm cartridge and a late model KX has a 25mm face shim with a 28mm cartridge.

I dont believe the distance between the outer edge of the face shim and the cartridge diameter has much to do with when the shim stack starts  to deflect, I believe that shaft speed impacts deflection. Reguardless of how much distance there is from the edge of the face shim to the cartridge wall (unless it was really tight) the float of the MV shim stack will only let a given amount of fluid flow before it starts to deflect.
I think I know what you were getting at, but I believe that even  3mm in difference between face shim and cartridge wall diameter is enough for unrestricted flow at maximum float.
