I was using my Canon 70-300mm f/4 USM. It bugs me when I look at these posted and know I can probably get a little more sharpness out of the "L" glass. I just can't pull the trigger on it! I'll think about it if I start making money on these. Actually, these shots were already resized and compressed before I set them up to post here. I should have started with my full-res versions from home.
I don't think your suffering anything for sharpness with the lens you are using. Granted we are talking web quality but those are pretty sharp overall on my end. Since that lens has the USM it may be a very good entry level sports lens and as a bonus you get some extra reachon the 70-200. Is it a constant f4? If so this seems like a very good option for starting moto shooters.
Thanks Chili! It's not a constant f4, so you can definitely play around with the aperature a little bit. I typically shoot in Shutter Priority mode though.
I think you're absolutely right...it works well for what I need. And the price was right. If I can get one of those cool vests and some press credentials, then I'll spring for the L glass!
I think either I'm misuderstanding you or your misunderstanding the constant f4 question. In a constant aperature lens be it f2.8 or f4 etc you can always stop it down to other aperatures, the constant just means can it be set at f4 at all zoom lengths, or does the aperature vary as you zoom. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=150&modelid=11922 If that is the lens the aperature varies between f4 and f5.6 as you zoom in on a subject, making the lens an f5.6 lens at the long end (300 MM).
My mistake. In aperature priority mode I can set it to f4 at a focal length of 70mm. But when I zoom to 300mm it goes to f5.6. The lens I have does have the USM but not the Image Stability.
I cant get over the "clean dirt" on the track....the places I photograpgh at are loaded with stones and clay chunks....gets tough on the camera when you get caught in a roost
