movin up questions

I'm 45 5.7 165lbs, and not a very aggresive rider, woods and trails the tighter the better, and east coast hare scambles, I road dirt bikes off and on all my life. I own a KDX200 and I'm getting rid of my Prairie 650 for a KTM 200 or 250EXC and I have questions.
From what I have posted above, I would like to know which bike I would be happier with. Does anyone have experiece with an auto clutch on either one of these bikes. I figure an auto clutch would work as will as an E-button on a 4-stroke. I have not been able to test ride either of these bikes. But from what I have read these seem to fit the style of riding I'm accustomed to. Also what modications would you reccommend for one of these bikes as soon as I buy it, example springs, jetting, etc. Not looking for a whole lot more power.
Please respond with pros and cons of these bikes. Thank you!!!

Both great bikes. The KTM's are perfect out of the box as far as springs for your weight. Jetting, just follow the recommendations in the Orange KTM manual for your elevation and temperature.

The only mods we do to our KTMs are bulletproofing, skidplates, hand guards, pipe protectors, shark fins,....

You will be amazed at the KTM200 performance, you'll wanna sell your KDX, too.

If I were your weight, and lived at low elevation, I'd ride a 200. As is, I am a fatboy living at 7,000' elevation, race as a 45 yr old A rider, and chose to ride 250's or 300's

thank for the reply i live at sea level currituck nc. and no im not gona sell the kdx ya cant get any money for them so its gona be a back up bike and i have a 14 year old that loves it better than his kx 85 so thats probley gona go. as far as the e button and auto question .i ment it wont be stalling so i wouldnt need an e button. and. witch auto clutch works best in these two bikes. thanks. fishy. sorry on rancors computer.

The 200 is a mid to high racers bike. The 250 has the a little more power than you are used to down low as well as throughot. Id go for the 300 personally but the 250 is not at all a bad bike. the ktm 200 is weaker off the bottom than what a kdx is. A GasGas 200 is a good bike racers bike too. You should check out the 250 and 300 Gasgas and Ktm before you buy anything. I know that I would hate to make a $6k mistake! I just feel like the 200 is a great bike for aggressive racers.

From what i keep reading the 200 may not be the way to go , but the 250 or 300 has a smoother bottom and thats what im a lookn for.Am i correct. We have a great ktm dealer close by in va. but i may buy used like 03 or 04

I bought my wife the 03 ktm 250exc 4stroke and it is a fun bike.Sometimes I like taking that to the track instead of my cr250 because you realy have to ring its neck to keep up with the pack and its very fun to pass people on there fully raced out 450's and Im on a 250 with lights.I would recomend this bike. :)

i would buy the 200 for a couple important reasons. first you can easilly do all the maintance your self, super easy rebuilds. its a smaller, lighter frame that you can easily throw around.

throw some guard on it, like the radiator guards and a skid plate. maybe change the the sprocket for a little wider ratio. first gear is a creeper. if i bought another ktm i would either buy a 200 or a 625.

why would a 200 be easer to do mantinance than a 250 or 300 2 stroke and i didnt know their was a 4stroke 250exc yet

i thought that you were talking about the 200 exc two stroke and the 250 exc four stroke. i still would buy a 200 because of the size of the bike. flickable

I have a 2005 KTM 250 EXC with an auto clutch on it. I rode a 2004 with the Rekluse autoclutch on it last year. The 2004/2005 250 motor is superb and easy to ride. Rekluse clutch going on it's second year and second bike - I love it. If you want a KTM all the 2T's are great it just depends on what you want. The 200 is fast and lite but it requires more attendion to keep it buzzing, the 250 is less so but a little larger. I'm a little guy and I still prefer the 250, especially with the auto clutch.

Stupid me i didnt know they had a 250 4 stroke. still aint buying one. dont want none of those headaches. and Fred T i thank you for the auto clutch report it seems like the ticket for tight woods and rocky trails, feet draggin stuff.

Just in case you are interested, I have an '02 200 MXC for sale (private seller) that is in great condition. I have had the bike for almost 2 years and have put probably less than 5 hr on it. Sorry guys, I'm not trying to use this forum as a market place but I live in central NC if your interested. Bike hasn't been raced and really has never even been in the mud.

Hardly! The 200 will pull a 165lb rider around just fine and it is the tight woods king. I've had kdx's and ktm 250's and 200,s. The 200 does not have the low end torque that the 250 has but it's no slouch either. It has more in the engine room than the current 4t 250's and it lighter.

I just bought a 03 200 MXC and I love it. I have only been on the bike a few times so far, but the power is great. I came of the the pipey KX100, so the 200 feel like it has tons of low end to me. I am sure it is always nice to have the extra power of the 250 or 300, but the 200 does feel and handle like a 125 and for a shorter and lighter rider I think that is great. The KDX's look pretty bulky and I would think that a 250 or 300 would seem somewhat nimble compared to the KDX. If you are less aggresive the larger displacment engine might be nice because they will be more lugable. All I can say is my husband (210lbs) took my 200 up a hill for the first time and accidently knocked the bike in to neutral twice (getting used to new boots) and still chugged up the hill. If you have the opportunity take one for a ride and see if you feel if has enough low end for you riding style.

i did the deed. just came home with a 2005 200exc. so far so good rode it in soom tight steep and very slimy hills near lexington va. then bought it home and climed some sand hills. still lovin it, knot sure when i will put rekluce in it, the clutch so good now. thanks for all your help frank.
