HELP!!! I am soon getting either a 1999 RM250 or a 2000 CR250 that I will be modifying for enduro use. My question is this, what is the better bike to modify for fast and aggressive off road riding? Both bikes a brand new and I am having a hard time deciding, my dad wants me to get the RM but I want the CR. So PLEASE what is better for woods riding.

ride red

go with the better rep. of course that will be the honda. I ride an 01cr250 an the bike is great and no problems. I heard that one the down falls with the rm is the crazy price of the plug don't believe me call your dealer and check out the price. All the bikes are good but go with red. The resale value holds up much better than the suzuki.(I'm ray I'm using my friend computer he rides yamaha 426 but he can't get it started:) )

Ray get over it, one kick and I am gone.... Dont be jealous because I get the hole shot every time. Not to mention little vibration, unlike the Hondas.

Thanks but I still want to know which has more low end and will make a better woods bike. I am not interested in resale value because this is the last bike I am buying for the next 5-7 years. That’s why I want to get a good one because I don’t get another. So, which bike will be better? Pros and Cons are welcome.

FWIW- I had a '00 CR250 that I rode off-road only (hare scrambles, trail riding, etc). With a lot of money, I'm sure you'll love it. The Showa's took forever to break in (so I'm told, I was always complaining about how harsh they were, and someone told me that even after 15-20 hrs, they still weren't broken in). It could just be that they're made primarily for motocross/supercross, and never would have felt plush offroad. You'll probably want a revalve. IMO, a flywheel weight is all you'll need to add to the motor. I ran a stock pipe, and felt no need to upgrade. Maybe add a reed block spacer? cheap mod, I've heard it achieves decent results when searching for more low end, but I never got around to it. Diff reeds maybe, too? I never got around to it. I never minded the vibration, never bothered me. In fact, I didn't notice it even after swapping bikes with friends. Fit and finish are as good as the reputation. I can't say about Suzuki, I've never owned one, but people that have usually say good things, people thathaven't seem to bash them a lot. I don't know what is truth and what is myth about the yellow bikes.

The CR also needs a larger tank, though I ran the stocker in one 2.5 hour race, and made it (30 miles, maybe? don't remember). I'm slow, though. That's roughly 12 mph. Maybe that's why I never felt the need for a steering stabilizer:o

Maybe you can find a good, used one that's already had most of these mods done? Might be a better bargain than the new bike, and I wouldn't hesitate one second buying a newer used HOnda, as long as you trust the owner changed the oil once in a while. Good luck with your search!

Lee-Email or PM CRSwade. He has an 01 CR250 set up for HS. Mike Kruger at CycleZone KTM did his suspension and it is incredible. Feels a lot like my KTM. Very supple. He also has a larger tank. Very unobtrusive on the red bikes. It nestles in nicely between the aluminum spars.
If you want, email me here: Click! and I'll forward your message to him. Good luck no matter which bike you choose, and congratulations!

Thanks guys, I am really excited about the new bike. I have been riding my 1995 XR250R for 2 years and it’s time to up-grade. I know I want a 2-stroke and I thought I might as well go with a 250. It will be my first brand new bike!

I plan on graduating early from High school and racing the hare scrambles circuit here in Texas. I want to do the FULL series and for that I wanted a new 250 that I have had set up just for me. I am planning on getting a Noleen exhaust system and having someone port the cylinder for more low end. I also plan on getting a flywheel weight and a few other goodies.

I would buy a nice used bike (I may still have to) but my dad has a thing with used bikes and doesn’t like them. Thanks for the advice, I am going to try and strike a deal with the shop that has the ’00 CR.

Well I just called the shop and the CR is sold and gone... The RM250 is $4800 and thats WAY out of my price range... Well it's back to looking for a good used 250...

$4800 for a 3 year old bike is barren robbery! I paid $4700 for my 2001 CR250 brand new last March. I wouldn't have boughten that RM unless it was around $3800 or so, maybe a little more. Too bad you lost the deal on the CR, it's a sweet bike.

I nearly fliped my lid when he told me the price... I just can't afford it. :( I am going to have to look for a used bike now...

Rather than buy an MX bike and convert it for enduros why not by an enduro ready, or almost ready bike? Yamaha WR, KTM exc, Huaqvarna WR or TE, Kawasaki KDX, Gas Gas or VOR enduro? I realize the last two are not always easy to come by, but you get my point.

There is nothing I want more then a KTM. But the price just kills me. I love the new Huskys and think that nothing would be cooler then to show up to a race on one, but again the price. I know I want a 2 stroke and I want a light bike with good suspension. I thought that a 250 MX’er would be the ideal choice. There is a guy who has a 2000 KDX200 with $2000 worth of mods and he is willing to let me have it for $3000. I am not sure yet what I will do...
