A couple of quick questions. I just cleaned and reassembled my power valve and installed new rings, both for the first time. Upon setting the shaft that runs from the clutch case to the KIPS valve gear I was trying to decide if the shaft needed to be set with "preloaded" and when I turned it I apparently gave it too much and broke the piece on the clutch end of the shaft( attaches with 2 small allen bolts to the shaft and has a pin that rides in the "advancer") . First, since I obviously don't have a clue what the technical terms are  ....what is the piece that broke called? When I reassemble everything, I assume it requires to be turned slightly, providing tension that returns the valves to closed position...is that correct?? Can someone describe the correct procedure/setting please. Also, I am looking for black or green side plates as well I want to change my radiator shrouds to green ( I have a '96, 'nuff said) do KX rear fenders fit with modification or is it best to order an MX fender from Fredetts. Thanks.

FIrst you need a manual

Buy youself a shop manual and it steps you through th whole procedure. The shaft you are talking about sounds like the advancer shaft and it does not turn by hand ( only by engine RPM's ) is very delicate, does NOT require a preload and has reverse threads. Until you get a manual here are some links to help you out.

Hope this helps. Take the time to read all of these articles as the are very useful. The guys who wrote them know what they are talking about.

Good Luck, Obie #8 ;)

A shop manual is invaluable for this. You don't need to "preload" the power valves. At rest, the advancer mechanism is naturally in the closed position. There is a mark on the main horizontal KIPS shaft that matches up with the dot on the "claw" gear. It will only line up when the powervalve / subports are in the "closed" position. Supporting the shaft is critical when tightening the left-hand nut (see photo link: here ).
As you have discovered, bad things happen when you stress that little pin.
